Conservation: Binding paperbacks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Because paperbacks are invariably monographs and generally new, it is impossible to base binding decisions on patterns of use.
If a large number of paperbacks must be processed on a regular basis, some thought might be given to investing in a power paper cutter and a gluing machine.
When the stack is dry, paperback edges may be lightly trimmed on the power paper cutter to make the covers flush, or the protruding edges of boards can be cut off with a hand shear (guillotine).

Paperbacks as an Area of Bibliographical Study: The Case of Virginia Woolf's Orlando
But twentieth-century paperbacks don't qualify as rare books, and they are rebound as a matter of policy; often that involves pasting the paperback covers to the new binding.
Classification is a persistent problem with paperbacks: they are often completely ignored as "real" books and not described at all; this is surprisingly the case even for writers like Dashiell Hammett and Dorothy Sayers -- their bibliographies don't begin to adequately describe the paperbacks that helped establish their popularity and reputation.
Paperbacks are also often treated as entirely special cases, such as in the bibliography for Kurt Vonnegut.

MoMA.org | The Collection | Rachel Whiteread. Untitled (Paperbacks). 1997
Untitled (Paperbacks) is the negative cast of the interior of a library, turned inward; a room filled with the spectral marks of books whose contents and titles appear to be lost.
The plaster surfaces are a visible manifestation of the room—the books' binding colors, their widths, and even the texture of their pages are still "readable." Whiteread's sculpture creates tension between the haunting and the poetic, the monumental and the fragile, and the ephemeral and the eternal.
Untitled (Paperbacks) is a room-sized installation that feels empty but isn't quite: on all four walls hang rows of long white objects that look like shelves but are not, for they are plaster, not wood, and their surfaces are uneven, and vacant.
