Maybe the follow-up game was rushed to cash in on the popularity of the original, or maybe the original didn't need "improving" in the first place.
Paperboy was a very successful game and ported to many, many, different platforms.
Paperboy 2 tries to enhance the Paperboy experience by adding a couple new elements: instead of just having to deliver to the left side of the street, you must deliver to both the left and right sides.

Paperboy is yet another classic that most people that have owned an older computer will recognize when they see it again.
Paperboy is overall an entertaining game but the PC version doesn’t really look good compared to the Commodore 64 and Amiga versions simply because of the poor EGA graphics.
Paperboy is a very original game and fun to play, although it is slightly difficult, especially since the isometric view is a bit blocky in EGA graphics.

Paperboy 64 Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Paperboy 64 happens to be one of those games, despite my initial feelings about the graphics and controls.
The original arcade game was simple- You're a paperboy (or girl), you deliver newspapers to subscribers, any try to increase the papers' readership, depending on your skills at throwing while avoiding the hazards of suburban life.
As I said before, the graphics in Paperboy 64 are odd, and take a bit of getting used to- the artists and designers have, fortunately, carried this look to the setup and menu screens, so you get used to all the angular weirdness going on.

There was a bug in the game that sometimes permitted the user to go past the end of the obstacle course and cause weird things to happen in the next day of delivering papers.
At the beginning of the game, there are three different streets to choose from for the paperboy to deliver newspapers, each with a different level of difficulty.
Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.

Paperboy (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paperboy is a 1984 arcade game by Atari Games.
The object of the game is to perfectly deliver papers to subscribers for an entire week and to avoid dying (using up all allotted lives) before the week ends.
The paperboy begins his route at the start of the street (bottom of the screen) and progresses towards the end.

Paperboy / Rampage is among the latest GBA "dual pack" trend, but it's clear these two games were programmed on the quick and cheap by a team that wasn't familiar with how the games operated in the first place.
Paperboy, a true Atari Games classic, has been ported to systems in the past with varying levels of accuracy and success.
The games aren't all that fun for people who aren't familiar with the originals, and for those that are, these two games are full of glaring flaws.

Paperboy 2 is a supposed improvement over the first Paperboy (which never made it to the Super NES) in that you can deliver to both sides of the street and play as either a boy or a girl.
When Paperboy was introduced to the Arcades in the mid-1980s, it was popular because it was unlike any other game and it was somewhat addictive.
If Paperboy 2 were a completely revamped, updated for the 1990s game with new perspectives, a variety of camera angles and advanced graphics, it would've made more sense.

Half action game and half puzzler, you have to maneuver a paperboy down the sidewalk on his bike and toss papers into paperboxes and onto doorsteps while dodging angry neighbors, rabid dogs, rampaging lawn mowers, and speeding automobiles.

The original game's controls (which were included on a real pair of bicycle handlebars) ported over nicely to the GBA; A pedals, B brakes, and either trigger button tosses newspapers.
Many of the game's speech samples made it to the conversion, and the original music, while simplified, is also there.

Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh (but it is a direct quote from the game).
As near as I can tell, you are a mild mannered paperboy (or girl, if you so choose) busily trying to satisfy your customers and build up readership for your paper.
And, as is not uncommon in N64 3D games, you can lose sight of your character fairly easily if you're not careful.

PAPERBOY breaks no ground in design or technical achievement, but if you enjoyed the arcade game, or if you'd like something for your kids that's a bit educational, certainly non-violent, and immensely entertaining, this is just the thing.
PAPERBOY can run on any ST (including the Mega series), although why anybody would want to run it is so mysterious, so unfathomable, that one's mind shuts down for repairs.

The same hip humor that made 720 such a blast is found in Paperboy as well, from the bizarre obstacles (breakdancers, kids on Big Wheels, the Grim Reaper) to the offbeat “oh man!” comments your character makes, with his paper-bag over his head, after falling off his bike.
It’s those little (and unnecessary) flourishes that gave the arcade game such visual appeal—the tape over the Volkswagen’s broken headlight, the individual house numbers, the burglar you could bean with a well-thrown newspaper to score some extra points.

Graphics are one area where you would expect this compilation to shine, and indeed the emulated games run perfectly as exact replicas of the original arcade games.
Given that these games were running on processors perhaps 1/1000th the speed of today’s systems this is little surprise (although Smash TV has some scrolling hiccups which aren't in the XBox game apparently, but it doesn't affect the gameplay).

In all honesty, the Game Boy Color version of Paperboy is definitely the worst rendition of the game, even beating out the Atari Lynx's waterdown port of the arcade game.
The game just isn't Paperboy without shattering a window and hearing "Service with a smile." All this, and it's extremely difficult to judge exactly where a paper is going to hit on a house.
The Game Boy Color version of Paperboy is a no-frills, straight-forward, flawed conversion, and nothing more than that.
