In all eight species, regardless of larval host plant, secretions of the fourth instar principally consisted of mono- and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, whereas those of the fifth instar comprised aliphatic acids and their esters.
Secretions from fifth instars were composed of varying proportions of isobutyric, 2-methylbutyric, and acetic acids, and methyl and ethyl (minor) esters of both isobutyric and 2-methylbutyric acids.
The heterogeneity of osmeterial chemistry in the tribe Papilionini may represent fine-tuning of chemical defense in response to shifting predation pressures as the larvae age and grow.

Because the likelihood of this intra-Papilioninae rooting was not found to be significantly higher than the traditional rooting, and because the traditional rooting is favored using maximum parsimony, we present the traditional rooting in our phylogeny.
This study also suggests that Praepapilio is sister only to Papilionini and Baronia is sister only to Parnassiinae, and likely none of the two are sister to all swallowtails as previously indicated.
Despite this general consensus, the relationships of the tribes that comprise the subfamily have been debated.

The presence of the spine of the discrimen is a point of similarity between Papilionini and Troidini that can be added to the well-known ones.
It is obvious that final answers on the precise ancestry of the Papilionini are not possible on the evidence available to us.
Still less can the vexed questions of the internal phylogeny of the Papilionini be properly resolved.

The uniqueness of its completely white-and-fl wing pattern is discussed in relation to other recently described taxa of Protesilaus and Heraclides (Papilionidae, tribe Papilionini) which apparently mimic white-and-fl papilionids of the tribe Troidini.
Such phenotypes, distinctive among taxa usually showing red or orange-red hindwing markings, are generally attributed to mimicry of white-and-fl colored taxa of the papilionid tribe Troidini (Johnson et al.
Protesilaus illuminatus (Niepelt) (tribe Leptocircini), formerly known from one extant male syntype and an accompanying female (and not mentioned in the literature since its 1928 description) was collected again in 1981 and studied by us (Johnson et al.

We analysed molecular data for three protein-encoding genes, mitochondrial ND5 and COI–COII, and nuclear EF–1α, both separately and in combination using maximum parsimony (with and without character weighting and transition/transversion weighting), maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods.
Our sample included representatives of all 10 genera of Troidini and distant ingroup taxa (Baroniinae, Parnassiinae, Graphiini, Papilionini), with Pieridae as outgroup.
Analysis of the combined dataset (4326 bp; 1012 parsimony informative characters) recovered the Troidini as a well supported monophyletic group and the monophyly of its two subtribes, Battina and Troidina.
