 Butterfly Summary
A butterfly is an insect of the Order Lepidoptera, and belongs to one of the superfamilies Hesperioidea (the skippers) or Papilionoidea (all other butterflies).
Presently butterflies are classified in two superfamilies, Hesperioidea, consisting of the 'skippers' and Papilionoidea or 'true butterflies'.
In this system, Papilionoidea consists of the series Hesperiiformes (with one family only, the skipper family Hesperiidae) and the series Papilioniformes (with five families).

 Butterflies FAQ
Butterflies alone are called Papilionoidea — which is the superfamily of butterflies.
In some older classifications another superfamily, Hesperioidea (the Skippers) were regarded as butterflies, but these days they are excluded because of their closer resemblance to Moths.
They are the names of the four butterfly families that together make up Papilionoidea, the superfamily of butterflies.

Seventy-four species of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea) were collected during surveys of the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab in Alachua County, Florida (T 10S-R 19E-S Sec 12).
During surveys conducted from the fall of 1996 to the fall of 1998, nineteen species were recorded based on only one or two specimens, five additional species were recorded from fewer than ten specimens, and the remaining species were encountered in higher numbers during certain times of the year.
The primary purpose of this document is to report the documented diversity and composition of NATL’s Lepidoptera fauna in the superfamilies Papilionoidea and Hesperioidea (butterflies and skippers).

In all species the cross-sectional outline of the tapering proboscis continuously changes from proximal to the tip while the central food canal, formed by the concave medial galeal walls, retains its oval shape.
The plesiomorphic condition of the galeal composition of Papilionoidea is regarded to include one basal intrinsic muscle in the basal joint region and two series of intrinsic muscles, i.e.
