AllThyroid.org: Thyroid Disorders & Treatments - Cancer of the Thyroid: Papillary & Follicular
On the other hand, when papillary cancer grows large enough to form a lump in the thyroid gland, we consider it clinically important, for it is likely to continue to enlarge and may spread elsewhere in the body.
Papillary cancer tends to grow slowly and to spread by means of the lymphatic system to lymph glands in the neck.
Once papillary or follicular cancer has spread through the blood stream into the surrounding tissues or to distant sites (especially lungs and bones), the usual therapy is to administer a radioactive form of iodine (131I) to try to destroy the tumor.

eMedicine - Papillary Necrosis : Article by Jeffrey M Donohoe, MD
Renal papillary necrosis (RPN) is the coagulative necrosis of the renal medullary pyramids and papillae brought on by a host of associated conditions and toxins that exhibit synergism toward the development of ischemia.
Renal papillary necrosis is considered a sequela of ischemia occurring in the renal papillae and the medulla.
The prognosis of renal papillary necrosis depends on the etiology of the ischemic insult, the number of associated pathologic factors, the dispersal of the necrosis, the involvement of one or both kidneys, and the overall health of the patient.

Papillary Carcinoma of the Thyroid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid is the most common malignant tumor of the thyroid gland, accounting for 80% of all thyroid cancers in the United States.
Unlike papillary thyroid carcinomas that arise in adults, mutational activation of BRAF is not a major genetic alteration in papillary thyroid carcinomas that arise in young patients.
Papillary carcinomas greater than 1 cm were identified in 11 cases (39%; 3 follicular variants), papillary carcinomas less than 1 cm were identified in 4 cases (14%), and benign lesions in the remaining 13 cases (46%).

Biomedical Imaging and Intervention Journal - Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the breast
Papillary carcinoma of the breast is a rare malignant tumour, constituting 1-2% of all breast carcinomas in women [1].
Invasive papillary carcinoma occurs infrequently, often as only a small focus of stromal invasion and is almost always detected at the periphery of the lesion [2,3].
Differentiation between in-situ and invasive papillary carcinoma is also difficult by fine needle aspiration or core biopsy because the centre of the lesion is often targeted, and invasion is often found at the periphery of the tumour.

Papillary and follicular carcinoma arise from the endodermally derived follicular cell that synthesizes thyroxine and thyroglobulin.
Fine-needle aspiration is one of the mainstays of preoperative diagnosis of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.
Ultrasonography: Cervical ultrasonography is one of the mainstays of the preoperative diagnosis of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.

 Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid
Until recently, papillary carcinoma of the thyroid was regarded as a single group with indolent clinical course and excellent prognosis.
Microscopically, the tall cell carcinoma was highly papillary and was composed of cells that were twice as tall as they were wide, and the cytoplasm was quite eosinophilic.
In conclusion, we emphasize that a histopathological report of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid should indicate whether the tumour is of the usual type or belongs to an unusual variant which may have an adverse prognosis.

 Papillary Thyroid Cancer Overview.
Papillary carcinoma typically arises as an irregular, solid or cystic mass that arises from otherwise normal thyroid tissue.
Papillary cancer cells absorb iodine and therefore they can be targeted for death by giving the toxic isotope (I-131).
There is good evidence that papillary carcinoma responds to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secreted by the pituitary, therefore, exogenous thyroid hormone is given which results in decreased TSH levels and a lower impetus for any remaining cancer cells to grow.

Papillary cystadenoma of the minor salivary gland of the lower lip
A case report of the papillary cystadenoma from minor salivary gland in lower lip of a 54-year-old man is described.
The papillary cystadenoma (PC) is defined as a cystic adenoma in which the cystic space is filled with papillary projections [1], arising from undifferentiated epithelium of the intercalated ducts of the glands[3] that include the minor salivary glands, the parotid glands, larynx, nasopharynx and the lachrymal gland [2].
There are case reports of papillary cystadenoma of the oral region [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8], however, PC arising from a minor salivary gland is rare [9, 10].

Stage II papillary carcinoma is defined as either (1) tumor that has spread distantly in patients younger than 45 years or (2) tumor that is >2 cm but ≤4 cm and is limited to the thyroid gland in patients older than 45 years.
Stage III is papillary carcinoma in patients older than 45 years that is >4 cm and is limited to the thyroid or with minimal extrathyroid extension, or positive lymph nodes limited to the pretracheal, paratracheal, or prelaryngeal/Delphian nodes.
Stage IV is papillary carcinoma in patients older than 45 years with extension beyond the thyroid capsule to the soft tissues of the neck, cervical lymph node metastases, or distant metastases.

The risk for a second primary tumor of the bladder associated with papillary renal cell carcinoma during the followup of 1 to 10 years was about 15 times higher than that associated with adenocarcinoma, which is the most common histological type of kidney cancer.
Extrapolation of the data predicted the prevalence of 1,100 to 3,400 microscopic papillary tumors in a single kidney in a patient with hereditary papillary renal cancer.
Conclusions: The basophilic papillary histology characteristic of clinically apparent renal tumors in patients with hereditary papillary renal cancer also characterizes the multiple microscopic lesions seen in the kidneys.

New York Thyroid Center: Papillary Thyroid Cancer
Most people develop papillary thyroid cancer before age 40, and it is much more common in women than in men, although the reason for this is not understood.
The majority of papillary thyroid cancers can be diagnosed by performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy, which involves removing fluid from the thyroid lump or enlarged lymph node using a small needle.
Other features of the fine needle aspirate which would suggest papillary thyroid cancer but which are not diagnostic for it include the presence of psammoma bodies, which are spiral rings of calcifications (fig 3), or the presence of papillary fronds which look like the fronds of a fern plant (fig 2).

Aggressive Digital Papillary Adenocarcinoma   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma is a rare variant of sweat gland carcinoma of the digits and volar surfaces which has the potential for highly aggressive biologic behavior.
Although aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma is virtually limited to the hands and feet, to the authors' knowledge it has not been previously reported in the podiatric literature.
The recognition of aggressive digital papillary adenoma and adenocarcinoma as a distinct clinicopathological eccrine sweat gland neoplasm is important because of the potential for aggressive local growth and distant metastasis.

For people who wear contact lenses, giant papillary conjunctivitis or GPC is a common cause of itchy and irritated eyes.
In very mild cases where the bumps are not readily visible, the diagnosis is often based on this tendency of the contact lens to ride up on the eye.
In most cases, treatment of giant papillary conjunctivitis involves discontinuing the use of contact lenses to allow the eye to recover.
