  Papillon by Henri Charriere
Papillon has been described as a masterpiece of oral literature in the sense Charriere writes as though he were telling the story over a pastis.
‘Papillon’ is French for butterfly and was Charriere’s nickname during his ears among the Paris underworld – for though he was innocent of the killing that he was charged for, he was no innocent.
Papillon records it all with the utmost humanity though there can be no doubt that he’s one hard man. When one of his breaks fails due to a convict informing upon him, the grass is dead within a week – courtesy of Papillon’s knife in his chest.

Papillon is the fascinating true story about Henri Charriere who was sent to the infamous prison colony in French Guinea for a murder he didn’t commit.
Papillon is a very exciting and readable book and has much more detail than the film, which omitted many parts of the story.
This is the book for you if you like adventure/ prison stories with a happy ending it is also worth mentioning that Henri Charriere also wrote Banco which is his further adventures after escaping for good though to thoroughly understand this later book reading Papillon is really essential.

Papillon was one of my favourite books as a teenager and having read it several times as an adult it still stands as a great work.
All what I knew about the book was that it was some sort of autobiography and it had been famous in the 60s as "Papillon" was a convict.
Papillon is not merely written, it's like a flow of words that get into your brain like water, and soon you forget who's who, you won't tell if you are either the reader or just the guy at Guyana.

The book (translated from the French by Aubrey-Maturin novelist Patrick O'Brian) was exciting, exotic, and for most readers, the first close-up look ever at the notorious French penal system in the Guianas.
The Papillon in the book was clearly a rogue who loved a good time, laughed a lot, and could get tough, but McQueen, although charsimatic in his own way, just isn't that guy and I never believe him for a minute.
Shortly after the first book was published, Henri Charriere, the real Papillon, was accused of misrepresentation and fraud by French researchers, but few cared because the book was so enjoyable, fact or fiction.

We have found that we can not change the genetic makeup of the animals we are feeding just by exposing them to a different diet for a small amount of time (1,000 to 2,000 years) any more than we can change any of their other genetically predetermined characteristics by taking them to a different climate.
The Papillon also has what some may call a "dainty" appearance, but the breed is not at all what anyone could mistake for dainty.
