Papillon (autobiography) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been described as an autobiographical novel or a fictional novel by critics, but Charrière always maintained that the account was accurate and true.
The book accounts for a thirteen year period in Charrière's life (October 26, 1932 to October 18, 1945) from when he was wrongly convicted of murder in France and sentenced to a life of hard labor in the French Guiana penal colony, to when he was released from a Venezuelan prison, free of French justice.
The film version was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and starred Steve McQueen as Henri Charrière (Papillon) and Dustin Hoffman as Louis Dega.

DVD Review - Papillon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Based on Henri Charriere’s real-life experiences that he immortalized in his bestseller novel of the same name, "Papillon" is the story of a man whose will is stronger than his physical body and ultimately wills himself free from prison despite all the odds he faces.
It is a harsh reminder that the story of Papillon as we see it in the movie is based on real events, and at the same time is a reminder that this remarkable individual has indeed been able to outlive all the odds and injustice he faced.
Papillon’s willpower and his relentless inventiveness are an example how mind can successfully supercede matter and literally move mountains.

Nancy Shumate tackles the problem head-on and, suggesting a new interpretation of the Metamorphoses, she inserts this novel squarely within in the narrative of religious conversion.
This novel indeed, as the author acknowledges quoting Winkler, presents 'an open ended problem text' whose 'revisionary interplay of shifting meaning' encourages the reader's participation and the reader's active intervention in order for any sense to be made out of it (p.
Nancy Shumate does not discard the frivolous component in the novel and its satirical elements but she argues that the author subverts those factors by adding a vivid and many times sympathetically depicted religious resolution so that we end up simultaneously with a satire of credulity and an evocation of religious belief.

In Papillon, released in 1973, he took a huge central part in a major studio project and if the experience exhausted him then it’s hardly surprising.
As Henri Charriere, the ‘Papillon’ of the title who was allegedly framed for murder and imprisoned in French Guyana, McQueen appears in virtually every scene and is the emotional centre of the film.

Based on his autobiographical novel, it tells the tale of Henri Charriere, who spent 14 harrowing years in the prison system of French Guiana, attempting escape eight times before he finally succeeded.
Papillon was a perfect vehicle for McQueen, offering him a character whose toughness is expressed through his ability to take abuse and refuse to be cowed.
Like most biopics, the events of Papillon sometimes feel rushed and compressed, but the picture succeeds so completely in its exploration of the friendship between the oddball duo of Papillon and Dega, that the final shots of Hoffman are intensely poignant.

From the Oscar-winning director of Patton and Planet of the Apes (Franklin J. Schaffner) comes the movie version of the true story of Henri Charriere, better known as Papillon (French for butterfly), a man who refuses to give up his quest for freedom regardless of the personal cost.
The two men struggle to survive their ordeal, the only thing keeping Papillon going, it seems, being his visions of escaping Devil’s Island and freedom.
One can understand why Papillon would risk escape attempts; the conditions under which the prisoners lived were indeed horrible, and many would probably rather (and undoubtedly did) die.
