I created this disambiguation page because while Tannin's page allowed people looking for Papua to find it, I was aware of the multiple uses and that its most common use in English is in fact as a colloquial for New Guinea.
Papua isn't only a colloquial name for New Guinea, it's also a historical name, given to the entire island by Don Jorge de Meneses in 1526.
The name of the Territory of Papua was exactly that, with "Papua" being an informal contraction much like "America" for USA or "Australia" for Commonwealth of Australia.
