Documentary papyri may be legal texts, tax receipts, letters, etc. Thus, papyrology, the study of documentary and literary papyri, contributes to a wide variety of areas of specialized research, including ancient and medieval languages and literature, science, magic, law, economics and religion.
In the early years of papyrology, around the turn of the century, when the greatest number of papyri were discovered, archaeological data was not considered to be as important as the text itself and so the provenance of most texts is simply listed as the site of origin.
A new expeditionary project for the Papyrology Room, in association with the Department of Classical Studies, is devoted to the conservation and decipherment of an enormous cache of papyrus rolls found in a scriptorium attached to a church in Petra, in Jordan.

Papyrology is the study of ancient literature as preserved in manuscripts written on papyrus, the most common form of paper in the Egyptian, Greek and Roman worlds.
Papyrology as a systematic discipline dates from the 1890s, when large caches of well-preserved papyri were discovered by archaeologists in several locations in Egypt, such as Arsinoe and Oxyrhynchus.

Although there has been much written regarding the history of papyrology (Pattie and Turner 1974), and the contribution the transcription of such texts has made to both literary and non-literary classical studies (Turner 1968), the process entailed in transcribing a text has never been made explicit.
Papyrology is in essence a “self consuming labor which leaves little or no trace of itself,” (Youtie 1963, p 11) and the expertise of papyrologists, as with the expertise of any professional, is a valuable but surprisingly elusive resource.
Experts utilise and develop many skills which become automated and so they are increasingly unable to explain their behaviour, resulting in the troublesome “knowledge engineering paradox”: the more competent domain experts become, the less able they are to describe the knowledge they use to solve problems (Waterman 1986).

Papyrology and the Dating of the New Testament   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
But in 1897-98, the world of archaeology was producing many new and exciting finds for the burgeoning science of papyrology, including p1, a fragment of Matthew 1, which at that time was the oldest text of the New Testament ever discovered, dating to the third century AD.
Even though all of the scientific evidence and the leading papyrologists in the world agree that 7Q5 is a fragment of Mark 6:52-53 and that it should be dated somewhere between 50 68 AD, many attack this piece of evidence.
It should be noted that those who attack do so not within the realm of papyrology, indeed the majority of those who attack 7Q5 are not papyrologists and are therefore not qualified, but they attack simply because they refuse to believe that the Book of Mark was written that early.
