Nearly 35,000 security personnel, including 55 companies of the Central para-military force have been deployed to ensure free and fair elections, officials said.

Bangladesh officials say that the overwhelming majority of them are Muslims from the Indian state of West Bengal who had become victims of a "religious cleansing" drive by the pro-Hindu government in Delhi.
While thousands have been rounded up from different Indian cities and pushed over the Bangladesh border in the past few weeks, the case of the 213 people received media attention because the Bangladesh Rifles refused to accept them, saying that their nationality could not be proved.
