She is the kind of gardener who can make a dead stick grow, but she had trouble one fall when she ordered a pear tree from the Stark Brothers Nursery catalog.
Planting is an act of faith, and as she put that tree in the ground she was thinking, most likely, of pears in quart jars and pints of pear preserves (my favorite on hot biscuits) lined up on the shelf in the basement.
Mama realized much later that the nursery had sent her the wrong kind of pear tree, an ornamental instead of a fruit-bearing one.

In the parable the trees that turned down the responsibility of leadership were qualified, they had something positive to offer, but they were unwilling to serve.
The olive tree was used for food (Numbers 11:8), for fuel for lamps, as a medicine (Isaiah 1:6, Luke 10:34), as an anointing oil (1 Samuel 10:1; 2 Kings 9:3; Isaiah 61:10), in sacrifice (Leviticus 2:4; Genesis 28:18), and its wood was used for furniture (1 Kings 6:23, 31-33).
The fig tree is also associated with the grape vine as a symbol of peace and prosperity, providing shade and sustenance for the family it protects (1 Kings 4:25).

The Rev. John T. Galloway, pastor of Wayne (Pa.) Presbyterian Church, noted ruefully that he was assigned to preach on the topic of "bearing fruit" in the wake of news that the PC(USA) lost another 35,000 members in 2000.
Bearing fruit and increasing membership are not the same thing, Galloway said, "but they are related." Preaching from the parable of the fig tree in Luke 13, Galloway said the role of the church is to nourish the soil in which the trees of faith grow.
In the parable, the tree was given a reprieve while the gardener tended the soil, trying to build up its nourishing power.
