The parabolic antenna's ability to amplify signals is primarily governed by the accuracy of this parabolic curve.
The feedhorn's illumination of the antenna must be attenuated or tapered to minimize noise contribution from the perimeter of the dish.
The antenna's efficiency rating is the percentage of signal captured by the parabolic reflector that actually is received by the feedhorn.

  definition of Parabolic Antenna
The purpose of a parabolic antenna is to concentrate the energy coming into the antenna from a single direction to a high energy reception point.
Parabolic or dish antennas therefore concentrate antenna energy that is arriving or being sent in a very singular direction.
Therefore with this concentration of antenna energy, the antennas are said to be high gain and will be able to receive signals long distances - even from satellites - as long as the dish antenna is pointed in precisely the right direction for the signal to be sent or received.

 Parabolic Discone antenna
The gain vs. size of the Parabolic Discone grows like a traditional "Parabolic Dish." The difference is that gain in the Parabolic Discone causes the RF field to flatten out into a "pancake" at higher levels of gain.
Henry O'Tani (G8OTA) suggested that the gain should be the square root of a "normal" parabolic dish, because of the spreading from one dimension to two dimensions caused by the cone (half the dB gain value).
The downside is that antennas must be large in terms of wavelength for ray principles to apply.

A parabolic antenna will give you good range for your signal, however, they are more challenging to aim correctly due to the fact that they have a narrow beamwidth and signals arrive and exit at an angle.
