The Paracel Islands (Chinese: 西沙群島/ in pinyin: Xīshā Qúndǎo; Vietnamese: Quần Đảo Hoàng Sa/ 群島黃沙) are a group of small islands and reefs in the South China Sea and part of the South China Sea Islands, about one-third of the way from central Vietnam to the northern Philippines.
Before 1932, Paracel Islands was placed in the Map of China by the Qing Dynasty and Republic of China, as well as in Vietnamese maps as Vietnamese territory by the Nguyen Dynasty.
Along with the Spratly Islands, the Paracel Islands are considered part of the Hainan Province by the PRC.

The Spratly Islands are a disputed group of approximately 100 reefs and islets in the South China Sea.
The islands contain no arable land and have no indigenous inhabitants, although twenty of the islands, including Itu Aba, the largest, are considered to be able to sustain human life.
While the Philippine claim to the Spratly Islands was first expressed in the United Nations General Assembly in 1946, Philippine involvement in the Spratlys did not begin in earnest until 1956, when on 15 May Philippine citizen Tomas Cloma proclaimed the founding of a new state, Kalayaan (Freedom Land).

I remember after the Chinese invaded and took the Paracel island from Vietnam in 1974, they buried Chinese artifacts in the island to prove that Paracel was a Chinese property since the ancient time.
