Paracho (formally: Paracho de Verduzco) is a small city located in Michoacán, Mexico.
A national music festival is held in Paracho once a year, usually the second week of August.
Some instruments that can be found in Paracho are 10-string mandolins, mandolins with armadillo backs, quadrados, armadillo-backed guitars, acoustic bass guitars and, of course, regular guitars and mandolins.

It is said that Paracho - which literally means "guitarmaking" in the Purepécha dialect - houses the world's biggest hive of guitarmakers, churning out about 80,000 guitars a year, priced from $50 to $3,000.
Meanwhile, the migratory drain in Paracho, mainly consisting of younger men heading to US and Mexican cities in search of better pay, may be a more immediate threat to the instrumentmaking tradition.

Three years ago when I was beginning my sojourn into the guitar life of Paracho, I was waiting in the Guadalajara bus station and another traveler struck up a conversation with me. When I mentioned Paracho he said, "Oh yes, Paracho.
And, more and more, some of the guitar builders from Paracho are traveling outside of Mexico to the U.S. or to Spain and getting a good dose of the state of the art on the outside — on the other side.
They are very nice and helpful when you find them, but the Paracho spirit is independent, and attempts at organizing the talent there is so far have been ineffective.

Paracho was founded as San Pedro Paracho in 1754 by the Rev. Francisco de Castro in the Meseta Purepecha area of Michoacan, northwest of Mexico City.
One of the most recent arrivals in Paracho is the Centro Para la Investigacion y Desarrollo de la Guitarra, (Center for the Investigation and Development of the Guitar), a few blocks away from Casa de la Cultura.

As everyone I suspect knows, Paracho, Michuacan is a Tarascan village of guitar makers in Mexico with a population of around 15,000 and by local estimates with somewhere between 1000 and 1200 guitar makers.
I went to Paracho in early March of this year; and uploaded a bunch of photos and notes to the classical forum at e-borneo.
It's also on a logical route to Paracho for Americans: by air to Morelia, by express bus over the new toll highway to Uruapan, then about 20 km over what was a good highway to Paracho, the last time I was there many years ago.

Paracho is well-known for it's luthiers who have constructed fine quality guitars for years, as well as other sometimes exotic stringed instruments.
Instruments from Paracho inlcude mandolins, Charangos (a small instrument similar to a mandolin with an armadillo shell back), Quadrados (a type of square guitar), Flamenco and concert guitars, and acoustic bass guitars.
To reach Paracho from Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, take Coastal Highway 200 north toward Lazaro Cardenas, turn off toward Uruapan and Morelia on Highway 37D near Feliciano, carry on up to Uruapan and from there carry on along secondary highway 37 in the direction of the Paracutin volcano and the town of Carapan.

This form of goverment rejects any influence or support from the Mexican central government, and rather bases their community life on the natural customs and laws of the indigenous people.
This is great news, because the people of Paracho are a thousand kilometers away from Chiapas, and are Purepechas, an ethnic group that is different from the Maya groups in Chiapas, that have been governed by this system since 2003.
I am happy for them, and toast for a good 2005 for them, and for all the people in the world experimenting in participatory economics and participatory democracy.

I would agree with the idea to find someone to take your friend around to different luthiers houses, but if you just want a cheap guitar from paracho there are plenty of those within sight on the main drag.
The paracho angle is just the part of me that loves a good deal.
I just figured that if you find a top maker in Paracho who you can trust will give you one of his own guitars, then you can get a very serious guitar for 1/3 the price.

Located in the mountains of the state of Michoacan--about a six hour bus ride west of Mexico City--Paracho may be the only place in the world where a whole town's economy is based on building guitars.
While it is true that a lot of the instruments made in Paracho are of relatively low quality (but they're also ridiculously cheap...), there is an emerging knowledge of the professional-level guitars that are also being built.
Marc Silber, the Berkeley Instrument Exchange (Montalvo), and Kenny Hill are among a few of the folks who are importing some of these instruments into the US and are helping these instruments gain acceptance with players.

I was in Mier, Mexico for about a week a year and a half ago, and I bought an old classical guitar off some guy on the street for like $10.
The label on the inside shows that it was made in Paracho, and the company is "Ochoa Guitarras".

The highlight of this trip for my husband was to be a trip to Paracho, where they make all sorts of stringed instruments.
When it looked like we were in Cheran, I finally had to ask the bus driver if there was a bus station, as people were pouring off of the bus in fits and starts.
He said no, and when I asked how we were supposed to get to Paracho, he pointed to a taxi in front of us and said we should take it.

If you don't know about Paracho and you are a guitarists you gotta check this out.
I believe it is the only town in the world thats economy is completely based on guitar building.
