The Parachute Regiment is the airborne infantry element of the British Army.
On August 27 1979 16 members of the Parachute Regiment and 2 members of the Queen's Own Highlanders were killed at Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland by 2 roadside bombs planted by the Provisional IRA.
The Parachute Regiment was based in Maysan Province, mostly quiet though they did have sporadic encounters with Iraqi guerillas.

During World War II, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (506th PIR) was a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army.
The regiment was initially formed at Camp Toccoa, Georgia in 1942 where it earned its nickname, "the Currahees", after the Currahee Mountain they trained on inside the camp.
The 506th was de-activated in 1945, then re-activated as the 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment in 1948–1949, again in 1950–1953 and finally, in 1954 to train recruits.

Later the Regiment was expanded into a Combat Team with the assignment of the 462d Parachute Artillery Battalion on 29 March 1944 and the 161st Parachute Engineer Company on 13 September 1944.

The regiment's first post-independence battle was when 2 Para was dropped near Tangail in Bangladesh on 11 December 1971 and was also the first unit of the Indian Army to enter Dacca.
The regiment took active part in Operation Vijay (Liberation of Goa) in 1961 and in Operation Pawan (Sri Lanka) with nearly 80% of the Regiment deployed in the Island in 1987-89.
Today, the regiment is perhaps the only one in the Indian Army to have taken part in every theatre and every operation in and outside the country.

 The Parachute Regiment
The Parachute Regiment was formed as the result of a call by Winston Churchill, in June of 1940, for the raising of 'a corps of at least five thousand parachute troops'.
The initial unit selected for parachute training was No 2 Commando this title was changed to the 11th Special Air Service and later to 1st Parachute Battalion and finally to the 1st Parachute Battalions in the 1st Parachute Brigade.
The Regiment continued to see action in North Africa through the Spring of 1943 with action at Tamera in the March of that year.

The 509th launched its third parachute assault at Avellino, Italy, only to find that the valley DZ was occupied the night before by the 6th German Armored Panzer Division.
Toward the end of World War Two, separate Parachute Infantry Battalions were no longer considered necessary, and the 509th was disbanded on 1 March 1944, with the survivors and returning wounded being sent to the 82nd or 13th Airborne Divisions as replacements.

This newly constituted parachute unit would take the motto “Currahee”, which is an American Indian [Cherokee] name meaning “stand alone”-a name that would become synonymous with its combat history.

The famous test platoon, the prime ancestor of all American Parachute Units, provided the nucleus of the 501st Parachute Battalion, which in turn provided part of the cadre, the unit number, the genealogical lineage and the heraldic background of the 501st Parachute Regiment.
To say that he took to parachuting is a gross understatement; he ate, slept, and breathed it, and jumped whenever he possibly could, often jumping many times in a single day.
As to matters of lineage, on 25 April 1957, the 501st Regiment ceased to exist as a tactical unit and was redesignated as the 501st Infantry, a parent regiment under the combat arms regimental system.
