Paradise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word paradise is derived from the sanskrit word Paradesha which literally means Supreme Country.
In the Western world it was translitterated in many ways such as the Avestan word of pairidaeza (a walled enclosure), which is a compound of pairi- (around), a cognate of the Greek peri-, and -diz (to create, make) and Armenian word of partez (a garden).
In the New Testament, paradise meant a paradise restored on Earth (Matthew chapter 5, verse 5 - the meek shall inherit the earth), though no reference is made to what condition (paradisaical or otherwise) the Earth would or should be in.

California in the 1950s seemed a land of limitless potential, boosted by world-class public services and Progressive politics; today, however, its future hardly seems unbounded, its services are in shambles, and its politics are increasingly driven by rancor.
The California public sector went from being the Nation's envy in the sixties to becoming among the sorriest in the nineties.

We were going to California, the place that has singularly fired the nation's imagination for decades both as a golden land of hope, growth, and limitless opportunity and as a dark locus of fear, decadence, and broken dreams - a dichotomy perhaps even more descriptive of Los Angeles than the state as a whole.
While it's conventional wisdom to say that California is a political bellwether for the rest of the country, it's less recognized that the state is also a sort of psychic gauge for the nation as well.
According to Schwartz, California history, especially in the 20th century, is ultimately a story about the melding of radical politics and radical aesthetics - and the failure of both to sustain themselves.
