Paragraph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A paragraph is a self-contained unit of a discourse in a written text dealing with a particular point or idea, or the words of a speaker.
Paragraphs are structured differently in different kinds of writing.
In prose fiction and Literary writing paragraph structure is more abstract, depending on the writer's technique and the action of the narrative.

Composition. Strunk, William, Jr. 1918. Elements of Style
Usually, paragraph C would indicate the actual or imagined circumstances of the poem (the situation), if these call for explanation, and would then state the subject and outline its development.
Paragraph D would indicate the leading ideas and show how they are made prominent, or would indicate what points in the narrative are chiefly emphasized.
If the paragraph forms part of a larger composition, its relation to what precedes, or its function as a part of the whole, may need to be expressed.

Schedule 8 — Financing of...: 13 Jun 2005: House of Commons debates (TheyWorkForYou.com)
Paragraph 1 of schedule 8 amends the definition in paragraph 4 of schedule 28AA, which defines persons who are deemed to be participating in the management, capital or control of a company.
The subsequent paragraphs go on to define P or Q as having effective control if his rights and powers over A or B, the target companies, together with the rights and powers of the other persons with whom he has acted, amount to control when they are taken together in aggregate.
Sub-paragraph (5) of paragraph 1 inserts a new sub-paragraph (4A) in paragraph 6—not to be confused with the paragraph 4A that we were debating earlier; for some reason everything in schedule 8 relates to a paragraph 4A.

 How to Write a Paragraph
The objective of this lesson is to teach students how to identify the main idea of paragraphs and the purpose of a topic sentence.
Ask students what the main idea is. Then explain that all paragraphs have a topic sentence, which tells the reader what the paragraph will be about.
Ask students to identify the topic sentence (sometimes I hint that the topic sentence is at the beginning of the paragraph) Have the students use the green crayon to underline the topic sentence.

Academic Resource Center - How Do I Write a Coherent Paragraph & Make Transitions?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In those rare instances when a topic sentence ENDS a paragraph, it ordinarily serves a rhetorical effect: you may choose to begin with a particularly compelling anecdote or series of facts, after which a topic sentence could serve as a conclusion drawn from the information preceding it.
Often, topic sentences do double-duty as transitions between paragraphs; however, a transition is not necessarily a topic sentence, nor does simply including a topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph provide a smooth transition (see section on transitions).
Within the same paragraph, transitional words and phrases like “Another consideration is…” or “Conversely” or “On the other hand” or “Additionally” signal a shift in the argument from one idea to the next: time for a new paragraph—you’ve even devised a transition.

Use equal amounts of space before and after the paragraph for text in table cells, to easily center the text vertically within the cell and create the desired cell height at the same time without having to set row height or cell alignment.

 Basic Paragraph Structure
A topic sentence usually comes at the beginning of a paragraph; that is, it is usually the first sentence in a formal academic paragraph.
Paragraphs are usually about one main thing and so their topic sentences should also be about only one main thing.
In addition to having a particular kind of structure, academic paragraphs (and multi-paragraph essays, which will be topic of another lesson) are different from "ordinary writing" (such as letter writing) in that certain kinds of expressions are not allowed.
