Parallel Lives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans is a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings.
The surviving Parallel Lives, as they are more properly and commonly known, contain twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pair contains one Greek and one Roman; as well as four unpaired, single lives.
Some of the more interesting Lives—for instance, those of Heracles and Philip II of Macedon—no longer exist, and many of the remaining lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae and/or have been tampered with by later writers.

Parallel Lives pays homage to Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) and his system of philosophical hermeneutics built through an exploration of historicity, language, and art.
Through display means, the project blends the lives of these individuals into one basic story, visually stating the relationship between individualism and society as best summarized by Gadamer's famous phrase: "we all are others, and we all are a self".

A question-and-comment session at the end often dwelled on their lives today and the persistence of racism; sometimes they would argue with each other.

Phyllis Rose' Parellel Lives is an exploration of marriage: what makes a marriage, how marriages operate, the power struggles within marriage, the impact of patriarchy on marriage, sexuality within marriage and many, many other issues.
A refreshing aspect of Ms Rose's Parallel Lives is that she is exploring these marriages from a feminist viewpoint that encompasses compassion for the man as well as for the woman.
Her prose style is lively as she delves into the separate personal stories of her couples and how their personal stories influenced the marriage as a whole.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Self-segregation is still divisive
There is an element of "self-segregation" as some people will prefer to live in an area dominated by their own ethnic or faith group.
However, these "choices" are often constrained by socio-economic factors, the lack of appropriate social and cultural facilities, the location of suitable schools and, most of all, by real concerns about the lack of safety and security in other areas.
These "parallel lives" do not meet at any point, with little or no opportunity to explore the differences and to build mutual respect, let alone to see them as enriching our communities.
