This resultant pressure may be resolved into two components P and L, one parallel and the other perpendicular to the direction of the vane's motion.
When a rectangular plane, movable about an axis parallel to one of its sides, is placed in an in- definite current of fluid, it takes a position such that the resultant of the normal pres- sures on the two sides of the ---t axis passes through the axis.
As the aperture moved away from the axis of the jet, the pressure diminished, and it became insensibly small at a distance from the axis of the jet about equal to the diameter of the jet.

Manifold - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His theorema egregium gives a method for computing the curvature of a surface without considering the ambient space in which the surface lies.
Such a surface would, in modern terminology, be called a manifold; and in modern terms, the theorem proved that the curvature of the surface is an intrinsic property.
Analytic manifolds are smooth manifolds with the additional condition that the transition maps are analytic (a technical definition which loosely means that Taylor's theorem holds).

 Science Timeline
In the second millenium bce, in the Rig-Veda it was maintained the Earth was a globe and in the Yajur-Veda that the Earth circled the Sun.
About 330 bce, Heraclides of Pontus said that the earth turns daily on its axis "while the heavenly things were at rest..., considered the cosmos to be infinite..., [and] with the Pythagoreans, considered each planet to be a world with an earth-like body and with an atmosphere" (Dreyer 1906:123-125).
He saw this as analogous to the question of human freedom in a determined nature; i.e., there is no room for ethical considerations Indeed, "Epicureans saw the development of the world as a random, one-way process" (Toulmin and Goodfield 1965:50).

Combining results from the theory of quadratic forms, a projective formalism and new theorems characterizing the intersection of two quadratic surfaces, we show how to obtain parametric representations that are both ``simple'' (the size of the coefficients is small) and ``as rational as possible''.
In the case where none of the masses are on the axis (trapezoidal configuration), it is rather easy to show that for any value of the two masses, there is exactly one central configuration.
This article presents one human proof and three machine proofs of a challenging geometric theorem that gives a beautiful representation of the area of an arbitrary quadrilateral in terms of its four sides and four internal angles.

The result is that, analogous to normal reversal of the 2-dimensional planar EM wave energy in 3-space, the pumped 3-dimensional mass-energy and its exact dynamics are reversed back along the time axis, to a previous 3-dimensional physical mass-energy state and dynamics.
Admittedly, this is a difficult subject, as completion of the theoretical work to produce a unified field theory uniting general relativity with electrodynamics is still in progress in physics, notably in the remarkable unified field theory work of Sachs [56], as further implemented by the higher symmetry O(3) electrodynamics spearheaded by Evans et al.
For example, transverse polarization – for a wave in 3-space traveling parallel to the z-axis – may be parallel to the x-axis or the y-axis, yielding two distinct modes of spatial transverse polarization.

Jef Raskin - Coanda Effect: Understanding Why Wings Work
The path of a ball spinning around a vertical axis and moving forward through the air is deflected to the right or the left of a straight path.
This particular pitch is thrown so that the ball spins around an axis as it moves forward, as shown in the top in figure 11-4.
It is the same phenomenon with the axis of rotation shifted 90 degrees.

The focal point of a lens is defined by considering a parallel bundle or beam of light incident upon the lens, parallel to the optic (symmetry) axis of the lens.
Example: If the axis and the light direction is left-to-right (as is usually done) and the object is to the left of the lens, the object-to-lens distance is positive.
In mathematics, theorems or propositions are established by logical arguments from a set of axioms, the process of establishing a theorem being called a proof.

 SEP: Actualism
Note that SA is a theorem of SQML (the proof is a simple exercise) and seems consistent with the actualist point of view.
However, the generality interpretation of theorems containing free variables is not quite enough to purge quantified modal logic of NE and its ilk.
Note that, because theorems involve neither constants nor free variables in Kripke's system, the Rule of Generalization has no purchase; any quantifier prefixed to a theorem in virtue of the rule would be vacuous (and hence could be inferred from the easily provable theorem φ → ∀αφ, for α not occurring free in φ).
