		Parallel importing can be an important tool enabling access to affordable medicines because there are substantial price differences for pharmaceutical products in different markets.
		Parallel importation is permissible under the TRIPS Agreement, and it is an important tool for meeting public health interests, where it enables importation of a patented medicine from a country in which it is sold at a lower price, so that more patients may have access to the cheaper medicine.
		Parallel imports are allowed on the basis of either a regional or an international exhaustion of rights principle.

		The significance of this is that an applicant for a parallel import approval does not need to provide evidence to prove that the product is safe and efficacious, he only needs to provide evidence that the product is identical to one which PSD has already assessed to be safe and efficacious.
