Parallel turn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The invention of the Parallel turn in skiing is credited to Austrian Toni Seelos in the 1930s.
The parallel turn is easier and more practical when skiing at moderate or faster speeds and also when skiing in difficult conditions.
Turning the ski using a parallel turn with skidding is the opposite of carving, where the edge of the ski does not lose its grip during the whole turn.

The Tao of Skiing: Principle and Techniques
During a turn, due to the skier's maneuvering pressure, the skis are arced upward.
Both prolonged slipping and skidding are not efficient techniques as far as turning concern, however, due to their ability to upset the turning force, they are effective techniques to change the curvature of a turning path and to maneuver the skier around a tight spot.
Thus, to turn downhill, the skier presses the uphill ski, and to turn uphill, the skier presses the downhill ski.

 Boost Your Burn Exercise Four
The parallel turn shown here is more stable than the A-frame turn used in Exercise Three, and forms the basis for the most powerful turning technique, the crossover.
This means that during counter-clockwise turns, the ankle of the left foot will be allowed a slight outward tip (supination) to force the skate into a left turn; likewise, during the clockwise turn, the right foot will tip slightly outward to force the skate into a right turn.
In the turns, demonstrate the parallel turn (outside edge left skate, inside edge right skate) for a couple of turns, then show the crossover in a couple of turns at the end of the demo.

Turns-All-Year: Telemark Skiing in the Pacific Northwest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Skiing - telemark turn: The telemark turn can be done only using free-heel skis, since the telemark stance, with the turning ski slid forward and the trailing ski aft, requires the trailing ski's boot to be flexed at the ball of the foot by raising its heel.
More weight on the turning ski allows it to aggressively lead the turn, and less weight on the trailing ski allows it to be slid laterally into alignment with the turning ski, producing more of a skidded turn.
In a parallel turn, the skis stay parallel to and mostly even with each other, allowing the skier to assume the classic parallel stance with legs together and slightly bent at the knees.

Biomechanical analysis of a parallel rutn in alpine sliing
The degree of force applied to the outside ski, inside edge is again relative to the radius of the turn and the angular velocity of the skier, as is the degree of distribution of the forces between the uphill and downhill ski.

As they gain skill, they gradually bring the tails of their skis closer together until they are parallel, and they traverse a narrower area and link their turns.
Downhill turning techniques used in Nordic skiing include the snowplow, the step turn, and the parallel turn, executed in a similar manner to Alpine skiing.
Cross-country skiers can also use the telemark turn, in which the turning ski is placed slightly in front of the other ski and the opposite knee is bent deeply as the skier slides around the turn.

Parallel turn - SnowSkiVillage.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Because of the way skis are shaped (narrower under the foot), the ski will turn (to the left if the pressure is to the right ski, to the right if the pressure is on the left).
The turn can only be made if travelling at some speed, since the speed of the skier generates the pressure needed to turn the skis properly as the skier banks into the turn.
Turning the ski using a parallel turn without skidding is known as carving the ski.

He is going to make a wedge turn to the right and then to the left, making quick, short wedge turns downhill, after a few of these turns he will begin to bring his skis closer to parallel with each turn.
The wedge turn is a completely different animal, parallel turns are direct descendants of the wedge and the wedge can be used to learn to tele-turn, as we will see later in the lesson.
In the illustration you see a turn to the right and the outside ski (left ski) is being pressured while the inside (right ski) is being lightened, the skis come together then resume the wedge with the new outside ski pressured (right ski) and the inside (left ski) being lightened and brought in.

A parallel turn begins at pole-planting, to initial the turning; unweighting to facilitate the switching of edges, thus changing direction; weight over to reset the edges so the skis run; then traversing until the next turn.
In contrast to the conventional parallel skiing, which uses poles to fight gravity to [up-]unweighting, ski without poles, the "flatbboarding" technique flows with gravity and utilizes down-weighting/unweighting techniques to change edges and to generate an angular acceleration for the turn.
A flatboard "slipping turn" is done by slipping the inside ski (braker) while keep the outside ski flat (runner); runner runs, and braker brakes, with the different speed of the two skis, "slipping turn" turns.

These conditions are conducive to parallel turns, especially when contrasted to the “normal” Northwest conditions which range from wind whipped powder to refrozen mush to new snow so wet and thick we referred to it as elephant snot.
Since, it has become (generally speaking) “ OK to parallel” there have been ongoing debates about the lack of efficiency of the tele turn and in a purely functional world there is some truth to this.
For those that preach the supremacy of the parallel, its technical superiority and overall efficiency, I would say we don’t ski to be efficient; we ski for the pleasure of it.

Snowplough turn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the completion of a turn, the downhill ski is the outside ski, and the uphill ski is the inside ski.
Since the sense of a ski being "uphill" or "downhill" changes over the course of a turn, it leads to some confusion, with different instructors using the terms to mean either the position of the ski at the start of the turn, or at the end of the turn.
However, when executing a stem turn the skier's weight is shifted to the uphill ski and the downhill ski is rotated to become parallel with the uphill ski.

Jesusfreakhideout.com: 38th Parallel, "Turn the Tides" Review
38th Parallel blends the rock rap vocals Christian music has come to know from bands like Pax217 with honest, Christ-centered lyrics that you'll find in such songs as "Three Times Denied." In fact, there are quite a few similarities between Pax and 38th Parallel.
Turn the Tides suffers from a sound that just doesn't quite go as far as it needs to and comes off too much like an independent release than a national debut.
Another problem is, with songs like "Hear My Cry" and "Turn the Tides," they tend to sound so much like their secular counterparts that their identity gets lost in the sound.

CPUs take parallel turn at Hot Chips
Parallel architectures emerged as the locus of attention in chip design at last August's Hot Chips 17 conference in Palo Alto, California.
In the embedded world, the first question is whether the parallelism exists in the data, in the algorithms or both.
If a transformation can be applied independently to many groups of data, the degree of parallelism is in theory limited only by the amount of data available at one time and the complexity of the transform.

This is the parallel beginning; the end of one turn creates the desired beginning of the next turn, avoiding the stem and making a smooth series of linked turns.
If the skier continues this outside ski dominance through the end of the turn and then attempts a phantom move, the lightening and tilting will transfer weight onto the new downhill ski, but this ski will be flat on the snow rather than tilted toward its little-toe edge.
This is not a parallel turn – the skis are not at the same edge angle, and they will likely splay apart into a stem.

38th Parallel - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
Bands including Project 86 and.rod laver laid the foundation, and now 38th Parallel is moving to the same side as Incubus and Linkin Park - in fact, the band cites Project 86 as a major influence and Linkin Park as an oft-used comparison.
The main issue that stands out with the record - and the one that will turn off the crowd fondest of Linkin Park and other parallels - is that the harmony is prevalent above the rock sound, giving the impression of a watered-down rapcore rather than an intense blending of contrast into the rock sound.
However, the diversity is also a roadblock, as it gives a certain inconsistency to the recording and lends the overall impression that the album is not as "hard" as advertised.
