The last report of volcanism at Chikurachki on Paramushir Island in the northern Kuriles (figure 3) was made by crews on fishing boats near the volcano on 19 November 1986; activity consisted of lava flows, ash clouds, and pyroclastic flows (SEAN 11:11, 11:12, and 12:01).

The island of Paramushir is the largest of the North Kurile islands and the second in area, after Iturup, in the whole Kuril chain.
On Paramushir, as on the other large islands of the Kurile chain (Urup and Iturup), an important role is played by eruptions similar to the fissure type ; on Paramushir these eruptions played a dominant role.
From the North it appears to be a regular cone with a large crater 450 m (1479 ft) in diameter and 250 m (820 ft) deep.

Among other minerals, noteworthy are barite manifestations on Kunashir Island and alunite, in the Zaozernoye sulfur deposit on Paramushir Island and near Lake Krasivoye 50 km to the southwest of the Burevestnik village on Iturup Island.
On Paramushir Island, a geothermal water deposit in the immediate vicinity of the town of Severo-Kurilsk is being explored since 1992, but exploration activities are presently stopped for the lack of finance.
To summarize, the available data on the mineral potential of the Kuril Islands suggest that they are potentially rich in many commercially important minerals, whose resources are sufficient to cover the power and industrial mineral demand of the islands and which can be utilized in many industries in Russia or exported to other countries.

Spider Collector's Journal: Kuril Islands 1997
On this first day on Paramushir, our main goal for 1997, much time was wasted transporting us in a jam-packed army truck (which broke down at least once each mile) to and from a boring coastal lake where we had 2.5 hours to collect, entirely in coastal meadow habitat.
This afternoon was our last visit to the west side of Paramushir, at Cape Kapustnyi where extensive shallows kept the large boat well offshore, the regular landing craft had engine trouble, and we had to be ferried ashore 2 at a time in a tiny rubber dinghy.
On the very summit of this peninsula, a rocky knob sticks up out of the sand, and here a few interesting spiders were taken, as well as some alpine-looking plants pleasing to the botanists who had stayed behind.

Beach habitats were always available; rocky uplands, which could have added many species, existed on most islands but were usually unreachable from the beach in the time available.
