The Paraparaumu Beach Course The 2002 New Zealand Open returns to the Paraparaumu Beach Links for a remarkable 12th time in the tournament's 95-year history, indicating just why this layout is regarded as New Zealand's best test of golf.
Paraparaumu was initially established as a nine-hole course in 1929 with a second nine added in 1937, before Alex Russell, student of famed architect Alistair Mackenzie whose designs feature three times in the world top-10, redesigned the layout in 1949.
And the mere presence of Tiger Woods in the 2002 Open was no doubt a significant factor in the decision to add an extra 160 metres to the layout through the redesign of the par four 3rd, and holes 12 and 18, both par fives.
