  Convair B-58 Hustler - USA
In the tail of the aircraft at the level of the elevons is the balance tank, containing a maximum of 8,195 Ib.
Towards the rear of the aircraft, in the fuselage between the forward and after fuel tanks, is the inertial navigational system, the so-called stable table,3 whose attitude is gyroscopically fixed while the aircraft moves around it in pitch, roll and yaw.
Enemy aircraft are presented as blips on the defense systems operator's radar scope, and the fire control equipment automatically locks onto the target, computes the lead and windage, aims the gun and notifies the DSO when to fire it--with the attacking enemy aircraft being at no time visible to the Hustler crew.

An example of a parasite aircraft is the Boeing X-43 being dropped from under the wing of a B-52 Stratofortress.
A parasite aircraft is an aircraft which is carried underneath, and air launched by a mothership aircraft.
The first use for parasite aircraft was in 1918, when the British used a Sopwith Camel, flying from an airship.

History of the Convair B-58 Hustler
The aircraft was to be launched from a trapeze which extended downward from its mother craft, but there is a Convair drawing showing the installation of a jettisonable landing gear that permitted takeoffs when the pod was fitted.
The parasite idea had arisen at a time when cost factors were particularly important, and it was thought that such an approach would provide a cost-effective answer to the problem of long-range strategic bombing.
At the time of warhead detonation, a photocell in the aircraft recorded the light intensity of the burst, and from the data recorded the yield, pressure altitude of the burst, the pod-to-aircraft range, and azimuth from aircraft could be determined.

 Drag
Because skin friction drag is an interaction between a solid (the airplane surface) and a gas (the air), the magnitude of skin friction drag depends on the properties of both the solid and the gas.
When the components are combined into a complete aircraft, one component can affect the air flowing around and over the airplane, and hence, the drag of one component can affect the drag associated with another component.
The angle of attack is the angle between the direction of the wing (chord line) and the relative wind of the aircraft.

Unreal Aircraft - Post-WW2 British aircraft gallery
Designed by John Digby, it was a large aircraft because of the large engine (24 cylinders) and the intention to fit a turboprop at a later date.
The Royal Navy obtained 402 aircraft under the Lend-Lease scheme, 832 Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm was the first to be equipped with them in early January 1943.
Avengers were used aboard aircraft carriers in an anti-submarine role, and in a shipping strike role in the English Channel and North Sea.

 Supercars.net - WWII Arado E.381 parasite-fighter
After being released by the carrier aircraft, the fighter started its attack and then glided to a landing on its skid.
It was heavily armored, powered by a Walter HWK 109-509A-2 rocket engine and had one MK 108 30mm cannon with 45 rounds of ammunition.
The pilot lay prone and entered through an upper hatch, thus he could not enter or exit after the Ar E.381 was connected to its carrier aircraft.

Unreal Aircraft - Flying Forever - Vakhmistrov Parasite Fighters
The concept was not only to provide a defensive escort for bombers over distances normally beyond escort range, but also to enable offensive sorties by the parasite aircraft, and long-range suprvision of air space.
The Z-1 Samolet Zvena ('aircraft-aircraft group') combination was first flown on 3 December, 1931, and whilst in the excitement the main gear was released prematurely, the fighter pilot recovered the situation.
This was the first and only offensive use of the parasite aircraft unit.

 Unreal Aircraft - Hybrid Aircraft
Sometimes the fuselages of two identical aircraft - as far as we can discover, all WW2 types - would be joined together by a common wing (and sometimes, tailplane) to form a twin-fuselage variant.
On other occasions, aircraft retained their usual configuration, but were fitted with engines other than the standard ones.
It was possibly the ugliest aircraft capable of flight, with a heavy bomber tail end on a single-engined army utility front half, and was intended to serve as a turret-equipped patrol nightfighter.

 Composite & parasite aircraft: Mistel
It is under those circumstances that Flugkapitän Siegfried Holzbauer, Junkers aircraft's chief test pilot thought about reviving the original, but already forgotten idea of Robert Mayo and to propose it to the Luftwaffe.
They feared that those composite aircraft would be used against their cities.
The Mistel considered offensive aircraft were now "desperate weapons" at the end of the war, along with many other projects of the third Reich, that could have under no circumstances changed the course of the war.

The new parasite aircraft was to be carried underneath the B-58 in the position normally occupied by the pod.
The parasite aircraft was to have consisted of two components.

Aeronautics - The four forces of flight (PARASITE DRAG) - Level 2
Skin-friction drag is caused by the friction between outer surfaces of the aircraft and the air through which it moves.
It will be found on all surfaces of the aircraft: wing, tail, engine, landing gear, and fuselage.
Parts of an aircraft which do not lend themselves to streamlining are enclosed either partially or wholly in covers called fairings which have a streamlined shape.

Certainly, the concept of bringing interceptors, or fighters to the combat arena seemed appealing, but those airplanes lacking the range to return to their lines after the combat mission provoked a question about their return trip which was not easily answered.
The parasite aircraft would no longer be fighters, but Polikarpov I-16s equipped with two 250-kilo bombs.
The Aviamatka PVO (transport aircraft for aerial defense) was tested at the end of 1935.

A concept pursued up until post-World War 2 was to carry escorting 'parasite' fighters attached to airships or bombers, for release when their services were needed.
VAKHMISTROV Z-SERIES PARASITE FIGHTERS - The Russian Vakhmistrov parasite fighter program dated from 1931, and was one of the earliest attempts to provide parasite fighter protection for heavy bombers.
From the early 1920s, sound attempts were made to refuel aircraft away from airfields and conventional supplies.

 Parasite fighters, page 1
Possibly the first 'parasite' scheme was devised in WW 1 in which Sopwith Camels were to be hung beneath airships like the R34 in the same way as the USN actually tested in later years.
What may well have been the last scheme of this type ever devised came in the 1960's when the bigger 'phase 6' Avro Vulcan was being planned as a skybolt carrier to replace the Blue Steel carrying B.2 in Britains nuclear deterrant force.
The aircraft would be hung over the side of the ship while the engine was run up to speed and then released.

Arado Ar E.381 Luft '46 entry
The aircraft could only be entered from a hatch above the cockpit, so the pilot had to enter the E.381 before the aircraft could be attached to the carrier Ar 234C-2 and had no way to escape in case of emergency.
The E.381 was to be attached to the underside of the Arado Ar 234C-3 and to clear the Ar 234's undercarriage upon retraction, the E.381 had to be mounted aft of the carrier aircraft's center of aircraft.
Once the coupled aircraft was carried aloft, it was released at a height of 1000 meters (3281 feet) above the enemy bomber formations.

Unreal Aircraft was originally created by John Burford as an extension of his "Australian Aviation Archive" site (now closed), John was about to take the Unreal Aircraft section of his site down when I happened to find it.
Please keep in mind this site doesn't claim to be a complete reference, there are whole classes of 'unreal aircraft' omitted, I'm an aviation fan not an 'expert' and I don't have access to any new material to expand the site.
