The three Parcae were called Nona, Decima and Morta, meaning respectively "nine-month birth" (which was actually the eighth month by the Roman method of calculation), "ten-month birth" (normal by the Roman method of calculation), and "still-birth" (from mors, death).
The Parcae may originally have been birth-goddesses who became equated with the attributes of the Greek Fates, who were called Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos.
The triplism of the Roman Fates sometimes appears to have encouraged their fusion with the triads of Celtic mother goddesses, who are sometimes portrayed with spindle, distaff and scroll, which were symbols usually associated with the Fates.

Her name is derived from parere ("create, give birth") but later it was associated with pars (Greek: moira, "part") and thus analogous with the three Greek Moirae.
