  Factsheets: Striated Pardalote
This Pardalote feeds in the foliage in the tops of trees, although occasionally coming close to the ground in low shrubs.
The nest is constructed close to the ground, usually in a tree hollow or tunnel, excavated in an earthen bank; small openings in human-made objects are frequently used.
Striated Pardalotes lay three to five white eggs and both sexes incubate and care for the young birds.

Pardalote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pardalotes are very small, brightly coloured birds native to Australia, with short tails, strong legs, and stubby blunt beaks.
Pardalotes spend most of their time high in the outer foliage of trees, feeding on insects, spiders, and above all lerps (a type of sap sucking insect).
Their role in controlling lerp infestations in the eucalyptus forests of Australia may be significant.

In size and shape they might remind American observers of small, colorful nuthatches (e.g., they frequently hang upside down when foraging), but they are not restricted to tree trunks or cones in their foraging, but glean throughout the foliage.
The Spotted Pardalote uses a tunnel built in clay or soil that ends in a lined chamber, and may ignore the approach of birders.
Pardalotes were once placed with flowerpeckers in the Dicaeidae, but Sibley and Ahlquist (1990) and Sibley (1996) showed that this small group of birds is one of the great corvid assemblage that arose in Australasia.

The largest of the pardalotes, the Striated Pardalote is easily identified by the bright yellow patch above the eye and red "elbow" on the wing.
Unlike the Spotted Pardalote, a breeding territory is not defended, apart from the area of the actual nest.
Striated Pardalotes occur in all areas of Perth, sometimes in mixed groups with Spotted Pardalotes, Silvereyes or Weebills.

Spotted Pardalote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus) is one of the smallest of all Australian birds at 8 to 10cm in length, and one of the most colourful; it is sometimes known as the Diamondbird.
All Pardalotes have spots and all nest in tunnels at least sometimes, the Spotted Pardalote has the most conspicuous spots and (like the Red-browed Pardalote) always nests in tunnels.
One of the difficulties in locating a Pardalote is that the contact call is in fact two calls: an initial call and an almost instant response, and thus can come from two different directions.

Rural Reporter - 21/08/2004: SPOTTED PARDALOTE - Liz Rodway (Hobart TAS)
Well Tonya Cochrane is doing her bit to bring the tiny "40-spotted pardalote" bird back from the brink of extinction.
Tonya runs a beef-cattle enterprise on Bruny Island, off the coast of Tasmania, but she's also the proud caretaker of a colony of the little bird, which is endemic to the island state.
From a low point of just 12 birds counted in 1986, there are now at least 70 birds on the property and this number is expected to rise as Tonya has planted thousands of manna, or white gums, which are the staple diet of the bird.

Someone told me that Pardalotes are a problem to the construction industry because as soon as they dump a pile of sand at a construction site the Pardalotes start digging a nesting hole.
What makes Pardalotes a challenge is that they like to feed in the upper canopy and the tops of mature White Gums are along way up.

Forty-spotted Pardalote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Forty-spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus quadragintus) is by far the rarest pardalote, now being confined to the south-east corner of Tasmania.
About 9 to 10cm long, it lacks the dark, white-spotted crown of the Spotted Pardalote, being largely light olive green above and grey underneath, but with similar striking fl wings with white spots—rather more than 40.
It forages more slowly than the Spotted Pardalote, almost exclusively in the foliage of the Manna Gum, and usually nests in tree-hollows rather than tunnels.
