Parengarenga is a large enclosed estuarine harbour with an indented coastline and a narrow entrance bounded by Te Paki Point to the north and Kokota Spit to the south.
The substrate in the harbour is predominantly silica-rich white sand, with the sand dunes of the Kokota Spit forming a spectacularly attractive headland at the harbour mouth.
The 30 square kilometres of catchment surrounding the Parengarenga Harbour is predominantly pasture, with plantation forestry to the south.

Parengarenga Harbour is considered to generally have a high level of water quality.
Only several sites (below the Waitiki landing and one in the northern arm of the harbour) showed sightly elevated levels of bacteria during summer, The elevated level at the site in the northern arm of the harbour may be attributable to the extremely low flow rate in this water way during summer.
The slightly elevated enterococci sample in the middle of the harbour during the winter sampling cannot be explained, and may be an artefact of the low number f replicate samples upon which this data is based.

Earlier in the year my interest in sea slugs generally was sparked by finding some examples of Philinopsis taronga here in Tauranga Harbour NZ.
Since then I have kept an eye out for them and have seen their numbers/activity decline during the winter months with only rare sightings of individual animals such as the example in the photo (taken in August).
In the lower close-up the creamy yellow spots in the translucent spots are clearly visible.
