In Buddhism, parinirvana (Sanskrit; Pali: Parinibbana) is the final nirvana, traditionally understood to be within reach only upon the death of someone who attained complete enlightenment.
It is the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice and implies a release from the cycle of deaths and rebirths as well as the dissolution of all mental aggregates (form, feeling, perception, mental fabrications and consciousness).
The parinirvana of Gautama Buddha is depicted in the Mahaparinibbana Sutta and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra.

 AllRefer.com - nirvana (Buddhism) - Encyclopedia
The word in Sanskrit refers to the going out of a flame once its fuel has been consumed; it thus suggests both the end of suffering and the cessation of desires that perpetuate bondage.
Epithets of nirvana in Buddhism include "the free," "the immortal," and "the unconditioned." Nirvana is attainable in life, and the death of one who has attained it is termed parinirvana, or complete nirvana.
This has often been interpreted as annihilation, but in fact the Buddhist scriptures say that the state of the enlightened man beyond death cannot be described.

Pudgalavada Buddhist Philosophy [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Even in Parinirvana, when the aggregates of the enlightened self have passed away in death and no new aggregates can arise in rebirth, the self, though no longer existent with the aggregates of an individual person, cannot actually be said to be non-existent.
In this way, all the statements made by the Buddha—and by others on his authority or on the strength of their own observation, concerning persons or selves and their past or future existences—can be shown to be based on the five aggregates from which those persons are inseparable.
The Parinirvana of the Buddha will then be his transition from a local existence supported by the aggregates to a non-local state which is unfathomable.

Buddhist Scriptures: First Rehearsal of the Tipitaka
After the Final Extinction (Parinirvana) of the Buddha, and the cremation of his body, the community of monks chose five hundred Arahants ('worthy ones', 'perfected ones') to work together to compile the doctrine and the discipline, in order to prevent the true doctrine from being submerged in false doctrines.
In other words, whatever else may be said about their authenticity, they are poetic compositions which may stimulate interest in the doctrine but are as remote as possible from being systematic expositions of it.
The First Rehearsal is recorded to have taken place during the rainy season of the first year after the parinirvana, the latter event being the era from which the Buddhists have reckoned their chronology.

Shimizu discusses the traditional difference between "closed form" iconic images which require very specific symbols and attributes used in a set form, and "open form" images which rely on a basic core story which the image is built around employing any number of allegorical representations.
This freedom of interpretation revolves around the core story of the death of the Buddha and the mourning of his followers, but the actual depiction is variable and left to the artist.
