On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state to join the Union and the Northwestern Territory was officially declared a part of the new state of Wisconsin.

Charles H. Speck, register of deeds of Crawford county, is the son of Frederick and Louisa Speck, and was born Oct. 9, 1854, in Milwaukee, Wis. He came with his parents to Crawford county in 1860, who settled in Eastman township, where Charles H. was reared on a farm.

 Grant Wood
Immortalized as a leader in American art and regionalism, Grant Wood was born on a small farm outside Anamosa, Iowa in 1891, the second of four children.
In 1917, Grant returned from Chicago to find that he had been exempted from the draft; he waived his exemption, was briefly stationed at Des Moines’ Camp Dodge, and was later assigned to designing Army artillery camouflage in Washington, D.C. With the 1918 Armistice, Wood returned to Iowa without having seen any formal military action.
Grant decorated and modified the house’s garage into an apartment and studio and would have Turner as his lifelong sponsor, benefactor, and friend.

Bob Bultman, a local landscaper and ecologist who focuses on habitat restoration, was brought into the project as an environmental consultant and installation technician.
Students visited several environmental art sites in Door County, including a privately owned installation in Baileys Harbor that Brey and Bultman were commissioned to create last fall.
The two began a series of meetings in December, 2004, and secured funding for the residency through a grant from the Northeast Wisconsin Arts Council.
