Paris is located on a north-bending arc of the river Seine and includes two inhabited islands, the Île Saint-Louis and the larger Île de la Cité which is the heart and origin of the city.
A century later, Paris was the centre stage for the French Revolution, with the Storming of the Bastille in 1789 and the overthrow of the monarchy in 1792.
The economic centre of the Paris metropolitan area is in the western half of the city proper and the central portion of the Hauts-de-Seine département, forming a triangle between the Opéra Garnier, La Défense and the Val de Seine.

Jacques Brel : Jacques Brel 8/Brel en Public Olympia 1961 - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Although Jacques Brel's modern reputation rests on the seemingly endless stream of future classics he tossed out in his capacity as a songwriter, acclaim during his lifetime was equally granted to his live performances.
It was a smart move indeed, then, for him to wrap up his Phillips label deal with a live album, recorded at the fabled Paris Olympia in October 1961, with piano accompaniment from arranger Francois Rauber and occasional songwriter Gerard Jouannest, and an orchestra conducted by Daniel Janin.
A playful "Les Paumes Du Petit Matin" is high comedy, as Brel toys with both lyrics and vocal sounds; "Ne Me Quitte Pas," on the other hand, reduces a vast auditorium to the silence of the grave, until even the strings behind it sound like trespassers on the singer's soul.

Ranked third on the Olympia bill behind Lindisfarne, internationally famous, and Van der Graaf Generator, who have a huge French following, Genesis stole the show on their first visit to the country.
On the night Lindisfarne were too loose, possibly due to the fact that the songs as well as the group are both a little travel weary, plus the fact that Rod Laidlaw discovered a Guinness house in the Rue Caumartin just around the comer.

If this set, the second of a two- night engagement at Paris' famed Olympia Theater in 1965, is any indication of the quality and inspiration of these performances, Monk fans definitely have something to look forward to besides reissues.

 Edouard Manet, French Painter
The first of these unconventional works was the Dejeuner sur l'Herbe (1862; Musee d' Orsay, Paris), refused by the Salon of 1863 but given a showing that year when the outcry about the rejection of experimentalist works led to a special exhibition to accommodate them, the famous Salon des Refuses.
Although Manet manifested his admiration for past art by basing the Dejeuner poses on Marcantonio Raimondi's print (c.1525-30) after Raphael's lost cartoon for the Judgment of Paris, the general public was shocked both by the bohemian candor of the subject matter and by the very summary way in which the brushwork suggested lighting and textures.

The Beginning and the End / Judy Garland à Paris   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of listening to this Garland set is that despite the familiarity of these much-recorded songs, her performances are surprisingly fresh and unique.
Garland also delivers a sweetly sung medley of "I Love Paris" and "April in Paris," and, as was typical of her concerts during this era, there is relatively little banter except for the occasional song introduction or self-deprecating remark.
Aside from her superlative rendition of the songs, there is ample evidence here of Garland's hold on an audience-the sustained applause and cheers are well-earned by a singer who is clearly at the top of her game.
