This article is about the Al-Qaida plot to destroy the United States embassy in Paris, France, as well as a munitions depot in Belgium.
The plot began to unravel when a 36-year old French Algerian conspirator named Djamel Beghal was arrested in late July 2001 for passport fraud at Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
Investigators say that the discovery of the Paris plot uncovered a large network of Islamist terrorists in seven European countries and the United Arab Emirates.

Beghal outlined the plot for a suicide mission against the U.S. Embassy in Paris that was to be carried out before March of next year, according to court officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The embassy declined to comment on the alleged plot other than to say in a statement: "This is part of an ongoing investigation by French authorities, in whom we have full confidence."
