Topic: Paris, Texas movie

In the News (Thu 31 Dec 09)

  :: rogerebert.com :: Great Movies :: Paris, Texas (xhtml)
The movie is always compared to John Ford's "The Searchers," a film in which a man wanders in the desert to look for a young woman lost to the Indians.
The Texas setting evokes thoughts of the Western, but this movie is not for the desert and against the city; it is about a journey which leads from one to the other and ends in a form of happiness.
He has always been fascinated by American movies and music; many of his films are set at least partly in the U.S. The music in "Paris, Texas" is by Ry Cooder, and it's lonely and filled with distance (they collaborated again on the Cuban music documentary "The Buena Vista Social Club").

 Paris, Texas deservedly wins Cannes
The psychological implications of this scheme are well-developed in the course of the movie.
In a symbolic interplay between actors and surroundings, the background of the scenes reflects their emotional content, whether it be the vast, vague space of rural Texas or the restless confinement of a Californian suburb haunted by the noise of a nearby airport.
Paris, Texas is the best new film I have seen in a long time; and those who wouldn't agree with me in this respect might still judge it well worth its time and price.

Paris, Texas (R, 1984)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Paris, Texas opens with the very simple image of a man (Harry Dean Stanton) walking through a barren landscape by himself along the Texas/Mexico border.
From then on, Paris, Texas proceeds as a recounting of how Travis's family fell apart and an examination of his attempt to forge a new connection with his son and put right what has gone terribly wrong.
But, until that happens, Paris, Texas holds its own as a refreshing reminder that there are still at least a few exceptions to the rule in the film industry.

That's not the case with "Paris, Texas." This is a defiantly individual film, about loss and loneliness and eccentricity.
Stanton's name in the movie is Travis, and that reminds us not only of Travis McGee, the private eye who specialized in helping lost souls, but also of lots of American Westerns in which things were simpler, and you knew who your enemy was.
"Paris, Texas" is a movie with the kind of passion and willingness to experiment that was more common fifteen years ago than it is now.

Ry Cooder : Paris, Texas - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Suggestive of both the imagery of Win Wenders' movie Paris, Texas and the desert itself, Ry Cooder's score is a peaceful, poetic journey into the soul of an acoustic guitar.
The songs move at a pretty, slow place, and the opening track sees Cooder plucking his guitar's strings and letting that sound vibrate into thin air; it's a motif that he returns to repeatedly throughout the score.
Since "I Knew These People" includes dialogue from Paris, Texas, the score works best for people who have seen the movie, but it's still a powerful and immensely evocative journey for those whose experience with the material is the album alone.
