penspotters :: Parker 51 (and friends)
Parker's 51 ads from these early years are worth a note: because magazine printing had not yet reached the stage where color photographs could be rendered economically, most advertisers (including Parker) relied upon paintings or drawings of the product.
From the start, the Parker 51 inspired the competition to bring out their own hooded-point pens; some were not as good as others, and for many lesser makers the hood provided little more than an excuse to hide a now-smaller point of conventional design.
One persistent legend about the 51 is that Parker often sold lots of caps by themselves (without the pens) so that people could put them in their pockets and pretend to be the proud owners of the very expensive new pen.

 PenHero.com - PenGallery - A Parker 51 Fantasy Trip Part 1
The Parker 51 was introduced to the world in 1941, a pen that would herald the modern age of the fountain pen and a pen that would be emulated and outright copied ever since.
Parker chose the name "51" both as the anniversary of the company's 51st year, and as a global brand name that would not require translation.
The 51 remains one of the longest continuing production designs, with the original Vacumatic filling pen being produced until 1948, the original Aerometric design produced until 1969, and a final squared ended design, similar to the Parker 61 produced until 1972.

 Parker 21
In 1950 Parker introduced the Parker 41 a somewhat smaller pen than the Parker 51 that was a mid-priced line between the Parker 51 and the Parker 21 with similiar design.
Parker realized that these pens handled the ink better than the old Parker 21 style, so when the Parker 41 was discontinued in 1951 the complete Parker 21 line was redesigned, the Mark II becoming in fact identical in most aspects to the Parker 41, the only thing that differed were:
The Parker 41 came in a wide range of colours and since the parts are interchangable it is quite probable that Parker used old Parker 41 stock and fitted to Parker 21 filling mechanisms, leaving both Parker 21's and Parker 41's in rare colours, such as described in the Parker 41 section of this penography.

In addition, Parker usually made demonstrators for fillers and other changes they were experimenting with during the life of the Parker "51".
A lot of unusual demonstrators are found in the Parker Archives, but some prototypes made it to the outside, probably with people involved in their development.
This was an experimental piece by Parker in an attempt to solve the problem of flooding/leaking pens during high altitude flights.

 Parker 51
Parker 51 pens have nibs that are much finer than modern pens.
These pens were originally made to sell for less than a standard 51 and the nib and filler were less expensive for Parker to produce.
All other parts are the same or of the same quality of a standard Parker 51.

 Profile: The Parker “51”
Parker is believed to have sold between 20 and 50 million “51”s; the exact number is not known because the company apparently stopped counting after the first 12 million.
The ”51” is smoothly streamlined and sized not to impress onlookers but rather for its ability to serve a broad spectrum of writers who could, would, and did use it, day in and day out, without having the luxury of changing pens three or four times a day on a whim.
Embodying Parker’s proven and very attractive design for mounting a sturdy (and replaceable) clip, it slips smoothly and reliably over the shell to seat on the clutch ring and then stays put in a way that was inconceivable to the makers of earlier hard-rubber slip caps.

 Parker 51
The 51 Special was a later addition to the line, an economy version without a gold nib and with a simplified Aerometric filler mechanism.
Not only does the new 51 use cartridges, it lacks the sophisticated, ink-trapping collector of the original 51, and uses a small, conventional nib instead of the original tubular design.
Mechanically, it seems to be closer to the 51 copycats of the 1940s, such as the Waterman Taperite and the Eversharp Fifth Avenue, or to the later Parker 45.

In 1923, at the age of 28, he convinced Parker Pen's Board of Directors to gamble the entire future of the company on a risky $125,000 advertising campaign to promote the new Duofold pen, while his father, George, was on an extended sea voyage to Asia and Africa.
