The population of Parkes on census night 2001 was 24 people.
Parkes is named after Sir Henry Parkes, a Federalist, legislator and one of the founders of the Australian Constitution.

Capital Hill ( postcode : 2600) is the location of Parliament House, Canberra, at the south apex of the land axis of the Parliamentary Triangle.
Though it was selected as the site for Parliament House in Walter Burley Griffin 's Canberra design in 1912, parliament buildings were only built on the site in 1988, when they replaced the previous location nearby.
Griffin's original plan for Canberra called for parliament to be located on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin where the land axis of the plan crossed the water axis, but in 1978 the Parliament voted in favour of Capital Hill for its permanent location.

Parkes is a country town of some 10 500 people situated on the Newell Highway between Forbes and Peak Hill, 364 km west of Sydney and 339 m above sea-level.
By the time Parkes was declared a municipality in 1883 the initial wave of gold fever had passed and free selectors had begun to take advantage of the Robertson Land Act, taking up smaller allotments of land and establishing the agriculture which has since become a mainstay of the town and area.
The Arboretum and Rotary Park are on the northern side of the approach to the hill.

The South Australian government extended their line to the border but the NSW government refused to join it to the two nearby towns so the locals formed the Silverton Tramway Company and, in 1888, built a line to the South Australian border.
Australian soprano June Gough was born at Broken Hill in 1929, taking the stage name June Bronhill in honour of her birthplace.
Although diverse of style they are all self-taught and are all noted for their distinctly Australian subject matter and the inspiration they draw from the town and its surrounds.

The main street is wide, the town has a large number of monuments to local people, the park is a delight, with luxurious stands of cool trees and quiet gardens for the visitor, and the shopping centre is an interesting mixture of the 1950s and the 1990s.
There is a caravan park as well as bungalows and camping areas, picnic and barbecue facilities, childrens' play equipment, boat ramps, and a kiosk with meals, petrol, bait, tackle and groceries.
Another recreation area on the park's western shore is Mookerawa Park to the south.

Sparling subsequently leased the house and it was here that Rachel Henning stayed when she visited in 1855.
