Brakes: Parking Brake Warning Light   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Purpose: The parking brake warning light notifies the driver that the parking brake is engaged.
Not using the parking brake for a long period of time and then activating it may cause cables and other parts to seize because of corrosion.
If the BRAKE light stays on after you've released the parking brake, it may indicate a hydraulic system problem because the same light may be used for multiple purposes.

Brakes - A Short Course on How Brakes Work
When you step on the brake pedal, you are actually pushing against a plunger in the master cylinder which forces hydraulic oil (brake fluid) through a series of tubes and hoses to the braking unit at each wheel.
With drum brakes, fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder which pushes the brake shoes out so that the friction linings are pressed against the drum which is attached to the wheel, causing the wheel to stop.
When you apply the brakes, brake fluid is forced, under pressure, into the wheel cylinder which, in turn, pushes the brake shoes into contact with the machined surface on the inside of the drum.

Parking Brake   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Rear drum brakes are much more easily used as an "emergency" backup, since all that is happening is the service brakes that are normally hydraulically actuated are being mechanically applied by the pedal and cable setup.
This measurement is taken without the parking brake being applied--the shoe must be in its "relaxed" position, and it will be best if the brake cables are disconnected at the levers on the backing plates.

The drawback to using this particular caliper on rear axle applications is the lack of a parking brake built in to the caliper.
This parking brake also mounts to the output flange of the transfer case which almost eliminates the chances of the brake lining being contaminated by a leaking transfer case seal.
Aside from the obvious advantages of the transfer case mounted parking brake, such as the ability to easily adapt rear disc brakes, there are also a few side benefits.

DTM Power - Does ur parking brake do this?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
This is due in part to the anti-squat/lift geometry as well as the way the parking brake cable's tension also prevents the suspension from moving around too much.
You will notice that if you apply the parking brakes going forward and then going backwards, there will be a large amount of suspension movement as the shoes shift slightly before they actually brake the car.
Because, if I were on a hill and released the parking brake, the car would roll causing it to rise/sag unevenly again when applying the parking brake.
