Parks Canada (now also known as the Parks Canada Agency) is a Canadian government agency that is mandated to protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada's natural and cultural heritage and foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure their ecological and commemorative integrity for present and future generations.
Parks Canada was established in 1911 as the Dominion Parks Branch under the Department of the Interior, becoming the world's first national park service.
Parks Canada activities are regulated under the provisions of the National Parks Act, which was enacted in 1930, and amended in 1988.

Parks Canada officials are vowing to keep the country's parks and national sites open despite the closure of two high-profile attractions on the first day of the strike.
Parks Canada has offered salary increases of three per cent in each of the next three years, retroactive to Aug. 2003, when their contract expired.

The four-day-old strike by Parks Canada workers was causing varying degrees of disruption to Canadians holidaying over the weekend and Monday.
