Chicago, Chicago Urban Parks Program: The Trust for Public Land
Chicago's tradition of parks and boulevards stretches over a century, providing the city with a world famous lakefront and its motto "Urbs in Horto" or "City in a Garden." While these parks and boulevards were remarkable achievements in the past, the city's growth over time has left new and changing neighborhoods without sufficient open space.
Working with the Chicago Park District, the Department of Planning and Development, and local neighborhood organizations, TPL is helping to expand and create new neighborhood parks, add more green space along the Chicago River, create new school campus parks, and assist the city as it creates a major open space reserve near Lake Calumet.
Because the current park is not large enough to serve all recreational needs, the city plans to expand the park so it can fully meet the needs of the changing Chinatown community with soccer and ball fields, a field house and a swimming pool.

The 74 acres bordered by Western and Belmont avenues, the Chicago River, and Lane Tech High School were known affectionately as "Riverview" to at least three generations of Chicagoans from as early as 1904 to as recent as 1967.
German Sharpshooter Park, as the area that would become Riverview was known as during the late 1800’s, was a shooting range and picnic grounds owned by the wealthy Schmidt family.
For whatever reason, the park was purchased by a LaSalle Street investment firm on October 3, 1967 for an estimated 6.5 million dollars and promptly demolished.

When the park was officially closed, Chicago police bombed protesters with tear gas and moved in with billy-clubs to forcibly remove them from the park.

Chicago’s Northerly Island was to be the first in a series of islands envisioned by the famed planner and architect Daniel Burnham as a unique island parkway for public recreation.

Jazz Age Chicago--Parks and Pleasure Grounds
For outdoor amusement during the early twentieth century, Chicagoans headed for the city's parks and beaches.
Though large city parks had been established in the mid-nineteenth century, other outdoor recreational spaces, including cemeteries, amusement parks, and beer gardens remained in private ownership, much to the dismay of those concerned about the unchaperoned mixing of men and women or the casual intermingling of people from different classes, races, or ethnic groups.
Public control of the lakefront represented in part an attempt to reign in the behavior of less conservative beach-goers, including those who used the beaches as a venue for love-making or the procurement of illicit booze.
