The Parliament of Australia is the legislative branch of Australia.
According to Section 1 of the Constitution of Australia, Parliament consists of the Queen of Australia, the House of Representatives (the "lower house"), and the Senate (the "upper house" or "house of review").
The Parliament of Australia is modelled on the Parliament of the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, the Congress of the United States.

The South Australian Old and New Parliament House is strongly associated with the enfranchisement of men and women in the nineteenth century.
South Australia was the first Australian colony, and one of the first jurisdictions worldwide, to give women the vote.
The attributes are: the surviving original fabric of the 1843 section of Old Parliament House and the 1855 building works for both adult male and female suffrage; the1857 building works, the extensions of 1861, 1864, 1875 and 1876 and the 1889 section or west wing of the New Parliament House for adult female suffrage.

The Parliamentary Library replaced its hard copy catalogue system in 1976 with an electronic system that was housed on the Parliament’s first computer.
In 1977, this system won an IBM Australia Award for use of technology, and was chosen to go to an IBM Conference in Chicago.
By 1987, a Windows version had been developed and in 1997 a web browser was also developed enabling continual access by clients external to the Parliament.

The smaller colonies were afraid that the larger ones would have more say in a federal parliament, so the conference adopted the practice of the United States: in the House of Representatives each state is represented according to the number of residents; in the Senate each state has an equal number of representatives.
The Act declared that on 1st January 1901, the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania would be united and known as the 'Commonwealth of Australia'.
On 1st January 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed in Centennial Park, Sydney by Lord Hopetoun, the first Governor General.

Our responses to the crisis in Solomon Islands, to the instability and economic vulnerability of Papua New Guinea to which Australia has committed an additional $800 million, and to the tsunami crisis, were all possible because of the strong and flexible relationships we have established over the years with our key development partners.
Australia is joining with PNG and Indonesia in a study to better understand the pandemic in our sub-region in order to inform effective approaches to combat it.

Hundreds of rioters smashed through glass doors at the front of the parliament and clashed with police in the public foyer in a confrontation lasting about two hours -- the worst violence ever experienced in the Australian parliament.
