		Ethiopia is a land of contrast where war and peace, poverty and abundance, highland and lowland, Islam and Christianity, nationalism and heroism, traditionalism and modernity coexist in all its forms.
		Ethiopia and Eritrea, headed by nationalist regimes that were originally allies, fought a bloody war in 1998-2000 in which tens of thousands died.

	News: Ethiopia, European parliament warns Ethiopia over opposition crackdown
		The parliament "calls on the Ethiopian government to end the persecution and intimidation of opposition parties and to release immediately thousands of people who were arrested at an opposition demonstration in June," it said.
		The statement came as the country's largest opposition group is boycotting parliament to protest alleged massive ruling party fraud in the May 15 polls and irregularities in post-vote investigations into their complaints.
		Lawmakers on Tuesday voted to strip the boycotting members of parliament -- who want the formation of a national unity government to oversee new elections -- of their immunity amid accusations they are trying to foment a coup.

	The unproductive parliament of Ethiopia
		Executive functions are exercised by members of the parliament appointed by the prime minister to the cabinet.
		In the end, this parliament has made only 4 laws3, out of which the most important is a proclamation to establish an independent inquiry commission, which recently released its reports, and the amendment of parliamentary rules to “allow more saying to opposition”.
		Even though the parliament is treated as illegitimate child, if it performs its duty in accordance with the Constitution and the House Rules, it could have earn the trust of Ethiopian people and the outside world.
