The Parliament of Georgia is the supreme representative body of the country which exercises legislative power, determines the main directions of domestic and foreign policy and exercises general control over the Cabinet of Ministers and other function s within the framework determined by the Constitution.
The Parliament of Georgia consists of one hundred and fifty deputies elected for a term of four years by a proportional system and eighty five elected by a majoritarian system for a period of four years on the basis of free, universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot.
The Parliament of Georgia for the term of its authority, in accordance to the rules determined by its procedure, elects the Chairman and the Deputy Chairmen of the Parliament, by secret ballot among them one from Abkhazian and one from Adjarian Members of Parliament by their nomination.

 Georgia: Backtracking On Reform
When Georgia adopted a new criminal procedure code in 1998, there was great hope that this would signal increased protection for the rights of those involved in criminal investigations and would be the first step toward ending the abuses inherent in the Soviet-era code.
The parliament's repeal of these reform measures, which had been intended to protect those under criminal investigation, is especially alarming given persistent reports of widespread torture and other ill-treatment of detainees to secure confessions, and other blatant procedural irregularities, during criminal investigations in Georgia.
However, the procuracy in Georgia is directly responsible for conducting the investigation in certain categories of serious criminal offenses, supervising the investigations of all other criminal offenses, and representing the prosecution before the courts.

The number of members was reduced from 12 to nine and includes the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia, the chairmen of the High Courts of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara, the Chairman of the Committee for Legal Affairs of the Parliament of Georgia and the Minister for Justice.
The Parliament of Georgia passed new amendments to the judicial disciplinary code, as a result of the Constitutional Court ruling that found the existing judicial disciplinary code to be unconstitutional because of the lack of judicial appeal mechanisms.
On June 25, the Parliament of Georgia approved Kote Kemularia, former Ambassador of Georgia to Russia, as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court.
