Queensland's Constitution was previously spread over a number of Acts, laws and documents including the Letters Patent of 6 June 1859 which established Queensland as a separate colony.
The Queensland Parliament passed Queensland's new Constitution, the Constitution of Queensland 2001, on 27 November 2001.
The Parliament of Queensland Act 2001 was passed as a companion Act to the new Constitution and brings together the existing laws that relate to the operation of Queensland's Legislative Assembly, its members and committees.

Queensland, from 1948 until the reforms following the end of the Bjelke-Petersen era, had a system of electoral zoning that could be used by the government of the day to maximise its own voter support at the expense of the opposition.
The Queensland "gerrymander", first introduced by the Australian Labor Party government of Ned Hanlon in 1949 used a series of electoral zones.
The entrenchment of a conservative government was also caused by socio-economic and demographic changes associated with mechanisation of farms and urbanisation which led to a drift of working class population from rural and remote electorates to the cities.
