The three smallest voivodships: Warsaw, Cracow and Lodz had a special status of municipal voivodship; the city president (mayor) was also province governor.
Newly acquired territories in the west and north were organised into the voivodships of Szczecin, Wrocław, Olsztyn and partially joined to Gdańsk, Katowice and Poznań voivodships.
In 1950 new voivodships were created: Koszalin - previously part of Szczecin, Opole - previously part of Katowice, and Zielona Gra - previously part of Poznań, Wrocław and Szczecin voivodships.

A Voivodship, also spelled Voivodeship, Voivodina or Vojvodina (Romanian: voievodat, Polish: województwo, Serbian: vojvodina (војводина), vojvodstvo (војводство) or vojvodovina (војводовина), Hungarian: vajdaság, Lithuanian: vaivadija), is a geographical unit of administration dating to medieval Romania, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Serbia (see Vojvodina), ruled by a Voivod (voivode).
The term voivodship is used in the native languages for the 16 voivodeships of Poland, and for the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia, and has found its way into English in some of the larger dictionaries such as the OED, though it is not in common usage

Each voivodship had its own parliament (sejmik), which exercised serious political power, including choice of poseł (Chamber of Deputies) to the national Sejm and charging of the deputy with specific voting instructions.

Voivodships were further divided into starostwo, each starostwo being governed by a starosta.
