The competition received funds under the Urban Improvement Program to create a vision for Parramatta Road as an efficient, economically vibrant and people-friendly precinct, to be known as 'Sydney Central'.

James Ruse Drive is the name given to the eastern portion of the Parramatta Ring Road - a larger project comprised of the Cumberland Highway between Pennant Hills Rd and M4; and the M4 between James Ruse Drive and Cumberland Highway.
The Parramatta Ring Road project was commenced in 1964 with the construction of the bridge across Parramatta River on James Ruse Drive (then Aston Street) and was completed in May 1992 with the opening of the Mays Hill to Prospect section of the M4.
Another 2km extension of the expressway conditions was opened in September 1979, from Pennant Hills Rd to Windsor Rd. It was at the opening of this stage that the route was named James Ruse Drive and given the State Route 53 shield.

For residents, the road reservations are a bitter reminder that the state government has not come clean about its proposals for road widenings and traffic planning across the whole of Sydney.
The F6 involves a widening of the Princes Highway to traffic from the south of Sydney and widening “feeder roads” to scuttle traffic from the F6 near the airport area to Parramatta Road, the M4 and M5, via a network involving local roads in the Marrickville area.
There is a possible connection from Victoria Road near Balmain to Parramatta Road via Johnston Street in Annandale, which would cut a swathe of bitumen and pollution through the beautifully preserved area, ironically preserved from sterile Norton Street-style development through the imposition of a road reservation in the past.
