XI. Splanchnology. 4d. The Hypophysis Cerebri. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The pars anterior is extremely vascular and consists of epithelial cells of varying size and shape, arranged in cord-like trabeculæ or alveoli and separated by large, thin-walled bloodvessels.
The pars intermedia is a thin lamina closely applied to the body and neck of the posterior lobe and extending onto the neighboring parts of the brain; it contains few bloodvessels and consists of finely granular cells between which are small masses of colloid material.
The pars intermedia in spite of the fact that it arises in common with the pars anterior from the ectoderm of the primitive buccal cavity is often considered as a part of the posterior lobe which arises from the floor of the third ventricle of the brain.

The processing of beta-endorphin and alpha-melanotrophin in the pars intermedia of Xenopus laevis is influenced by background adaptation -- Maruthainar et al.
The major form of beta-endorphin in the pars intermedia of the frog adapted to a white background was identified as alpha,N-acetyl beta-endorphin (1-8); it was accompanied by a small quantity of acetylated peptides with molecular size similar to beta-endorphin.
In contrast, the pars intermedia of the frogs adapted to a fl background contained approximately equal amounts of alpha,N-acetyl beta-endorphin (1-8) and the larger forms of beta-endorphin.

Pars intermedia pro-gamma-melanotropin and a cleft protease, a mitotic conspiracy in the pituitary?
RT-PCR of mRNA isolated separately from the pars intermedia and pars distalis suggested that this protease is also expressed in both parts of the pituitary gland but surprisingly confocal microscopy in situ hybridisation located it to the colloid cells in the cleft.

Cells emitting orange-red autofluorescence have been found in the pars intermedia of aging rats.
The fluorescence maximum of the emission is localized in an area of the spectrum where the most intense band maxima of porphyrins are located.
The inclusion-bearing cells of the pars intermedia also contain debris that might be due to the phagocytic activity of these cells.

The neurohypophysis (pars nervosa) is composed of axonal processses of the supraopticoparaventriculohypophysial tract.
Hormones of the pars nervosa are nonapeptides: 9 a.a.
Oxytocin (oxyphysin) synthesizing neurons predominate in the paraventricular nucleus while those for arginine vasopressin (pressophysin) are found in the supraoptic nucleus of mammals, birds and reptiles.

 Pituitary Gland
There are three regions of the pituitary gland represented on your slide: the pars distalis (or anterior lobe) and the pars intermedia (or intermediate lobe) of the adenohypophysis and the pars nervosa (or posterior lobe) which is also called the neurohypophysis.
The intermediate lobe (pars intermedia) is not well defined in the human, and is much larger in animals (i.e., the cat pituitary, Slides 157 and 229).
