However, the central crisis of the opera is necessarily played out in the flesh: Parsifal resists the allure of a chorus of flower-maidens, whose chromatic vocal lines borrow directly from the quintessential music of unfulfilled longing of Tristan und Isolde.
Eventually, Parsifal rejects the seduction of worldly pleasure --- laced with overtones appropriate to Freud's yet nascent discipline of psychology --- and through this gesture of purity gains the power to defeat Klingsor's attack at the act's conclusion.

When the transformation to the Grail Ceremony occurs, skilled use is made of the zig-zag pathway, of a large obelisk-shaped free-floating boom (which features in other scenes in many different guises) of cathedral-like gauzes and backdrop and of the stage's capacity to raise, lower and rotate individual sections.

Parsifal was Wagner’s last opera, written when he was near 70 – when he was beginning to disturb those of his supporters who saw him as a fearless religious sceptic.
We remark on this element of Parsifal, both because of the quasi-religious quality evident on first reading the text, but also because it, as well as the genius of the music itself, will provide the susceptible listener/reader with philosophical and aesthetic riches to sustain him as long as he lives.
