Abortions performed after 14 weeks of pregnancy can be performed using two main methods-"dilation and evacuation" and "dilation and extraction." The type of procedure used depends on the length of the pregnancy and what the doctor and you feel is best for you.
And most abortions are done with some kind of local anesthetic (injected into the cervix) Most women report that this injection does not hurt, although some say that it feels like a little pinch.
Most abortions require the dilation (or opening) of your cervix, so that the embryo or fetus may be removed from your uterus.

'Partial-Birth' Abortion Term Puzzles Many Doctors
Other language in the act--"partial-birth abortions involve the killing of a child that is in the process, in fact mere inches away from, becoming a 'person'"--leads some to believe "birth" is being redefined as any fetus leaving the vagina at any time, which could apply to all abortions.
It is therefore widely assumed that the ban is moving in on abortions performed in the second trimester, or roughly the 12th through 24th week of pregnancy, when the fetus is not yet viable.
Many doctors and medical organizations say they assume it applies to just one procedure rarely used late in the second-trimester, known as intact dilatation and extraction or intact D and X. However, they also say that since the language of the act is not specific, it could be interpreted as criminalizing all abortions.

Senator Jeffords' Statement on "Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act"
The "so-called" Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act is one of many attempts to overtly or covertly undermine and overturn the constitutional right afforded women in Roe v.
We can reduce the number of abortions through strong support of Title X (Ten), encouraging adoption, educating on the use of emergency contraceptives, and requiring insurance policies to cover contraceptives.
You will hear my colleagues say this definition is limited to late term abortions, or abortions performed during the third trimester or post-viability.

The problem with this argument is that the individuals who perform these abortions are already violating the Hippocratic Oath and Biblical values, violating basic human rights and are so callused they do things perceived as abhorrent to anyone else with an intact conscience.
And there are other techniques available for abortion that are late term in nature, and this bill would in no way stop other abortions.
It isn't a matter of whether or not they now will refuse to perform late term abortions, to them it is a matter of how best to get around this narrowly defined law.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. - Abortion After The First Trimester
Unfortunately, anti-choice zealots seek to limit access to abortion through, among other means, laws imposing a fixed date for fetal viability and bans that would outlaw safe, medically appropriate abortions as early as 12 to 15 weeks in pregnancy.
Abortions necessary to preserve the woman's life or health must still be allowed, however, even after fetal viability.
Compounding the problem is the fact that the cost of abortion rises with gestational age: in 2001, non-hospital facilities charged $774 for abortion at 16 weeks gestation and $1,179 at 20 weeks.

Most partial-birth abortions are performed in the 18 to 26 week range, so this depicts such an abortion in the typical time period when they are performed.
Thus, at the stages that most partial-birth abortions are performed, the great majority of babies would be "live births" if they were expelled by spontaneous premature labor, and many would be long-term survivors.
Beyond that, many of the claims of medical "necessity" for partial-birth abortion, on closer examination, turn out to involve not any bona fide risk to a mother's physical health, but rather, a diagnosis that the baby has Down syndrome or some other disorder that cannot be cured.
