Partita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Partita was originally the name for a single instrumental piece of music (16th and 17th centuries), but Johann Kuhnau and later German composers (notably Johann Sebastian Bach) used it for collections of musical pieces, as a synonym for suite.
Bach's 6 Partitas, BWV catalog numbers 825-830, are respectively in B-flat major, C minor, A minor, D major, G major, and E minor.
The Partitas are generally regarded as the most difficult of Bach's three sets of suites--these, the French Suites, and the English Suites.

The Partita in D minor for solo violin (BWV 1004) by Johann Sebastian Bach was written in the period 1717-1723 and is said to have been dedicated to the memory of Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara Bach.
Johann Sebastian Bach, 1748 portrait by Elias Gottlob Haussmann Johann Sebastian Bach (21 March 1685 – 28 July 1750)[1] was a German composer and organist of the baroque period, and is widely acknowledged[2] as one of the greatest composers in the Western tonal tradition.
It is a piece that is considered in many ways singular and while it tends to overshadow the remainder of the partita, it merits the emphasis on it by musicians and composers alike.

Partita Report   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Partita, the newest orchestral work by Elliott Carter, was given its premiere on 17 February by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim.
Partita's opening gesture describes the shape of the piece; two grinding five-note chords in extreme low and high registers, followed by a two-part staccato, scherzando "accompaniment" figure (also in extreme low and high registers) ascending and descending to meet in the middle register with a single six-note chord.
The achievement of the CSO in preparing Partita with only three hours of full rehearsal is a tribute to the musicians and to Maestro Barenboim, who conducted with great brio and élan.

NPR : Performance Today -- The Bach Partitas with Richard Goode   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Standardized during Bach's time, the German form of the partita contained the allemande, the courante, the sarabande and the gigue as its core, while other dances could be arranged around them.
After the grim and "hard as nails" quality of the previous A minor Partita, this mammoth Partita in D major, clocking in at 32:06 on this recording, comes bursting out like the sun with its opening overture that recalls the pageantry of the French court.
Bach's partitas aren't meant to be danced to, as evidenced by certain sarabandes that almost completely lose any dance feeling.

 NEW! Our Partita Font
Partita has been designed as an alternate music font -- a replacement for Petrucci -- which gives Finale files the look of Score, a music notation program which runs under DOS and does not use fonts.
In addition to the convenience of using Finale rather than Score to notate files, Partita overcomes some of the disadvantages of Score -- problems which arise from Score's PostScript implementation -- which are discussed in a special white paper available here.
Partita has been designed with a character set and metrics similar to that of Petrucci, so that Finale documents notated in Petrucci may be easily switched over to and back from Partita at any stage of production.

But among this flood of music is a most welcome reissue - and timely, since this is the 250th year of Johann Sebastian Bach's death - of three of Bach's keyboard works, the Toccata in C minor, the Second Partita and the Second English Suite, that she recorded for her former label, Deutsche Grammophon.
The piece alternately sparkles and shimmers, with the long lines of counterpoint softly illuminated, The effect is not unlike candlelight flickering through various colors of a stained glass window, or admiring the strokes of a Rembrandt portrait in a sea of lush earth tones, and is equally entrancing.
The Second Partita has long been a favorite of Argerich's, and she chose it to open her Carnegie Hall recital.

Violin Concerto in E & Chaconne from the Partita II by Henryk Szeryng at jsbach.org
These are live recordings from the concerts Henryk Szeryng gave in Romania in 1961 with the occasion of the George Enescu festival.
Here Szeryng is even more brilliant than in his studio recordings of the works - 1965 and 1968 for the Partita, 1976 for the violin concerto with Neville Marriner, all of which are reviewed on the J.S. Bach homepage as well; I have not heard his earlier recordings of the violin concertos.
His approach to the music is similar to that in his studio recordings, but a live concert brings more spontaneity in the performances.

Monthly Discussions - No. 1 - Chaconne in D minor from Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004
The D minor partita is my personal favourite; not only because of the huge chaconne at the end, but because of the rich flowing melodies of the other movements, that seem to be a sort of musical discourse leading up to the final monument.
The Chaconne, which is the movement by which violinists are always measured, is performed with a great deal of energy, as Cruft attacks the strings with verve in the initial measures, then maintains this energy throughout the movement.
Well, I've wanted to own a copy of the violin sonatas and partitas for a long time, but they were always "next in line" and something kept butting its way in front.
