Thus it's not necessary to boot computer from CD or floppy disk to perform operations with system partition.
Unlike freeware and some other commercial partitioning software, that are based on Windows ® algorithms and are therefore bond to their limitations and restrictions, Partition Manager uses ONLY its OWN algorithms.

In the field of computer engineering, hard disk drive partitioning is the creation of logical divisions upon a hard disk drive that allows one to apply operating system-specific logical formatting.
With Windows the standard partitioning scheme is the core OS on the C: drive, with the rest of the drives allocated to applications and data.
The partition table, as used in the IBM PC architecture, was first devised in late 1980s, when hard drives were coming into use.

Smart Computing Article - Time For Partitions?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Anytime you modify the partition structure on a hard drive, the data in that drive is at risk.
Although Partition Manager's feature set is strong, novice users may struggle to use the utility, and the program doesn't perform advanced tasks as easily as other utilities.
Partition Resizer treats each partition as a block on the drive; to move or resize a partition at the beginning of the drive, move or resize each partition ahead of it first.

In computer engineering, hard disk drive partitioning is the creation of logical divisions upon a hard disk that allows one to apply operating system-specific logical formatting.
With Microsoft Windows, the standard partitioning scheme is to create a single partition, the C: drive, where the operating system, user data, applications, and page file all reside.
A /home partition is useful for desktop uses as it allows a clean reinstall (or a fresh install of another Linux distribution) while leaving data intact.

Review: VCom Partition Commander Professional 10 - Personal Computer World
Partition Commander Professional 10, from VCom, is far more capable than the Disk Management tool built into Windows and makes some otherwise rather daunting tasks manageable.
Partitions can also be merged; it's not unusual to decide all too late that separating files was an inefficient use of disk space.
Finally, the Partition Commander CD is bootable and can be used to rescue disks when they go badly wrong, a vital aspect to any partitioning utility.

Smart Computing Article - The NTFS Conversion   (Site not responding. Last check: )
For example, you might have WinXP installed on the C: partition of your drive using NTFS and have a D: partition for shared files using FAT32 on the same drive.
We converted the D: WinXP partition on a dual-boot system to NTFS and could still boot to WinMe on the C: drive without any problems other than the lack of access to the D: partition in Windows Explorer.
Partition Commander didn't give us a choice besides FAT32, but that happened to be the file system we wanted for our 6.5GB WinXP partition anyway.

What is partition? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Partitioning is particularly useful if you run more than one operating system.
Soft partitioning, on the other hand, does not physically affect the disk at all, but it fools the Finder into believing that the disk is partitioned.
The advantage of this is that you can partition the disk without affecting the data on it.

Partition management with EWLM, Part 1: The basic rules
The entitled capacity usually corresponds to the desired processing units set in the partition profile, except there might be cases where, during activation of a partition, there is not enough free capacity in the shared processor pool to assign to that partition.
For instance, if a partition is not part of a group and you assign a group number, MS detects that within seconds and activates the partition management function.
Alternatively, if a partition belongs to a group and then you set the group to "None," MS notifies DM that it's leaving the group and is no longer part of the partition management by EWLM.

 Partition planning tips
Instead of partitioning the entire drive during installation, you may want to consider partitioning only the portion of the drive that you know you will actually use.
For now, create partitions that are large enough to hold your current files, plus allow for future growth.

Split or merge disk partitions without losing information.
To achieve this, the /home and /tmp directories should be separated from the system files in e.g.
(The same is true for *BSD-based operating systems, except that partitions are called slices.) This ensures that if one file system gets corrupted, the rest of the data (the other file systems) stay intact, minimizing data loss.
