  Encyclopedia: PartitionMagic
PartitionMagic is a computer program for hard disk drive partitioning originally made by the PowerQuest corporation but now owned by Symantec.
PartitionMagic is capable of resizing an NTFS or FAT (16 or 32) partitions, which is a distinct advantage over other partitioning tools.
In 1995, PowerQuest's PartitionMagic gave Windows users a way to easily divide their hard disks into multiple virtual drives, or partitions, without reformatting--something that has become even more useful in recent years as drives balloon to monstrous capacities and users run multiple operating systems on the same disk.

Specifically, and according to the PartitionMagic documentation, Linux's fdisk creates extended partitions with logical partitions listed in order of creation, which may not be the same as the order of the partitions themselves (e.g., sda6 may appear before sda5).
If you find yourself with a disk that PartitionMagic won't handle because of Linux-created logical partitions, you may be able to use Linux's fdisk to delete the offending partitions and recreate them in the correct order.

 TechnoFILE Looks at PartitionMagic
PowerQuest's PartitionMagic is a handy utility that, though its original raison d'être may not be a big deal anymore, can still be a valuable addition to your hard drive.
We first used PartitionMagic as a solution to "hard drive weight problems." That was back in the early days of larger hard drives, when most of them were formatted using the old fashioned FAT ("File Allocation Table") method.
The best time to invoke PartitionMagic is when you're first setting up your hard disk, because partitioning adds "drives" to the hierarchy and that can confuse your system if your CD-ROM (usually the last drive in the series) already has a letter assigned to it.
