Fausto Bertinotti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fausto Bertinotti (born on 22 March 1940 in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan) is an Italian politician and leader of the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista.
In 1994, the year in which he was elected to the secretariat of the Rifondazione Comunista and to the Italian and European parliaments, Bertinotti resigned all his trade union positions.
As an ally of the "progressives" alliance in the 1994 general election, he agreed the "withdrawal" pact with the Ulivo coalition: Rifondazione would refrain from running candidates in certain electoiral districts and advise its voters to support the candidates of the centre-left.

At the same time, the seven-year-old Rifondazione Comunista - a party born, like the PDS, out of the split which followed the dissolution of the old Communist Party (PCI) - was experiencing its second major haemorrhage.
For Rifondazione to bring the government down and pave the way for the right to return would be political suicide, reducing it to a small, marginal party of protest.
For him Rifondazione stands for a radical alternative or it stands for nothing; it must stand by its principles or be paralysed by the fear of its enemies.

Rifondazione Communista is perhaps the most significant, self-conscious and determined attempt in Europe to develop a ‘a new political subjectivity’ – an evocative phrase which brings together in one concept the notion of a new kind of political agency and a new kind of political self-consciousness.
In 1998, Rifondazione refused to continue its support for the Prodi government because of employment legislation it was passing, which failed to include the promised 35 hour week and which many saw as part of a general acceptance of the neo-liberal global consensus.
For the majority in Rifondazione, life within the coalition is not so much about tying Prodi and the DS down to a detailed radical programme as about ensuring that the coalition’s activities and policy development are always rooted in the movements.

Communist Party of Italy - OpenWiki
The Communist Party of Italy, or Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI) in Italian, was formed in 1921.
In 1991 the PCI disbanded to form the Partito Democratico della Sinistra (PDS) or Democratic Party of the Left, with membership in the Socialist International.
In 1998 the PDS, with several smaller parties, the Laburisti (liberal socialists), the Cristiano Sociali (christian socialists), the Comunisti Unitari (right-wing split of the PRC), the Sinistra Repubblicana (left republicans) and the Riformatori per l'Europa (social democratic syndicalists), co-founded the "Democratici di Sinistra" (DS) or Democrats of the Left party.

Livio Maitan 1923-2004--a critical assessment: Part 3: A “Trotskyist” in Rifondazione Comunista
Rifondazione appeared to us as the unique occasion and instrument by which we could move towards the recomposition of a new revolutionary political subject, through a complex process involving clashes, ruptures, experiments, openings and realignments.
Any serious examination of the role played by Rifondazione reveals that it is neither a “tool” for the “construction of a revolutionary party,” nor an “anti-capitalist force,” but rather an obstacle to the development of an independent socialist orientation by the working class.
To claim that the leader of Rifondazione wants to “put the perspective of the overthrow of capitalism on the agenda,” is, in light of his political record, simply absurd.

Rifondazione Communista is perhaps the most significant, self-conscious and determined attempt in Europe to develop a "a new political subjectivity" - an evocative phrase which brings together in one concept the notion of a new kind of political agency and a new kind of political self-consciousness.
After Genoa, and Rifondazione's strong identification with the global justice movement, this movement-driven thinking was strengthened within the party, with Bertinotti as its champion within the party and, unusually, in public debate.
The location of Rifondazione's Congress in Venice was a symbolic reminder that Italy is not just a stunningly beautiful place to visit as part of European culture, but also a place from which to learn and become engaged as part of creating a new European left.

IN THE wake of the general strike in Italy on 16 April the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (Communist Refoundation) organised a May Day rally which I was invited to address.
Rifondazione's demand for an extension of Article 18 to protect workers in companies with fewer than 15 employees is a bold move to turn a defensive struggle onto the offensive.
By linking up the evident anger of organised workers with the dynamism of the anti-globalisation movement, which has transformed Italian politics since the protests against the meeting of the G8 leaders in Genoa last year, the party is participating in a new industrial and political development.

 Weekly Worker 427 Thursday April 11 2002
The 5th Congress of the Communist Refoundation Party of Italy (Partito della Rifondazione Comunista - PRC) represents a watershed for not only the Italian left, but perhaps the European left as well.
In winning his perspectives, general secretary Fausto Bertinotti is making a play to remake the party, to refashion an “alternative left” in Italy and to rebuild a European left infused with the anti-capitalist movement.
Although the PRC is often lauded as a ‘party of recomposition’, all factions of Rifondazione argue for revolutionary Marxism as the basis for their political movement.

The "Partito Radicale" has been founded in 1955 as a fission of the left wing of the "Partito Liberale Italiano" (5.2.1.); one of the founders was Marco Pannella (now leader of the party together with Emma Bonino).
At least to the world outside Italy the "Partito Radicale" became to be known, as porn star Ilona "Cicciolina" Staller was elected to the parliament in 1987 on the ticket of this party.
The "Partito Radicale" used with quite some success the referendum as a political tool (for instance for the right to divorce; against criminalization of abortion etc).

Election Resources on the Internet: Elections to the Italian Parliament
In the election, held on April 21, 1996, the Olive Tree secured a narrow majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and a somewhat larger majority in the Senate.
Despite the support of several Rifondazione deputies - who subsequently broke with the party to establish a Party of Italian Communists - the Prodi government was defeated by a single vote in a Chamber of Deputies confidence motion.
The absence of an electoral agreement between the Olive Tree and Rifondazione helped the House of Freedoms, which went on to win the May 13, 2001 parliamentary election, with clear majorities in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

The action of the comrades in Progetto comunista (the journal of the left) and especially its national leaders, from Ferrando downwards, over the past few years has been politically inconsistent - they have neglected the systematic tasks of building the left, of political education and political intervention in the party and in the various movements.
